I've been lurking here for over two years and I finally pulled the trigger and got this beauty.

It's an 84 6.9 non turbo. I've got a few questions about it.

First, it has been 5 speed swapped. PO said it was out of a 7.3 idi truck but does anyone know how to confirm that? I need a clutch for it and I'm not sure if I should get one to match the engine or transmission of if I need to mismatch the two.

Second, the rear axle is the semi float Dana 60 and I'm looking to swap to a full floating. I was at the pick and pull and saw an e350 with a clean rear axle, and also a 79 f350 with what looked like a ff Dana 70. Sorry I didn't get pictures of either but does anyone know if these would fit? I like the van axle because it has discs.

Third, every where I've read said that turbos for these trucks are easy to find used, but I've been looking and haven't seen a single one. Where do I look? Out does anyone have one they'd sell me?

Lastly, any general advice for reliability on these trucks would be great. I'm driving it from Arizona to Alaska in April and its going to see 4 months of hard use while I'm up there so what would you recommend for peace of mind upgrades/repairs.

Thanks in advance guys.

Welcome to OB nice ride!

First my best suggestion is determine gear ratio of axles.

Once uou get that locate a 87 up rear axle with same gear ratio as they are easier to work on for brakes and so forth than full float dana. The fldrums slip off over hub...no messing with bearing retaining nuts and zo forth.

79 axle woukd require re welding spring perches as would van axle.

You want as direct a bolt in as possible.

As for clutch without having trans pulled its hard to say. Did they use an SMF or DMF flywheel.

Removing i spection plate will determi e smf vs dmf.

Once you know whuch...u can choose partz. Best to get a complete kit IMHO.

Turbos...look in marketplace!

Welding the spring perches isn't a huge issue, but I would like a bolt in solution. I just liked the idea of getting the disc brakes.

When I pull the transmission how do I tell if it's a dual mass out single mass flywheel?

Thanks for the info.

Dual mass is two pieces that slip on each other with springs for dampening. Single mass is just that. A single thick flywheel.
