Changed the glowplugs saturday. When I pulled the #1 plug, it had coolant on it.:dunno If I remember correctly, same thing was found when I did those plugs a few years ago. Never had any symptoms of hydro-lock. No coolant smell in the exhaust. Nothing. Where would the coolant come from?

Mel, on those head cut-out's, are there any coolant passages near the glowplug/precup??

The other thing.........I cranked the DPS IP fuel screw to max and just backed it off the bottom a hair. Boost builds quicker, but EGT's are not much worse. I think I made 800 on the pyro pulling a hill saturday evening. I NEED MORE FUEL.:D

Also, a word of warning to all guys running water filters. Make sure you lube the rubber seal with grease or anti-seize when you install them. I just used a light bit of oil last time and it was a fight to the death to get it off the filter head. Had to remove the head and put it in a vise.......then use the monster channel locks to get if off. None of the filter wrenches would do the job.

Heath, yea the whole backside of the precup is water jacket area. Could be you have a small crack or pinhole. Not good news I'm afraid.

Yeah, I was afraid of a crack somewhere near the cup or near the GP threads. That's another missed crack from the "Yah Hooh's" at Pendley's Machine Shop (see my post in the Hall of Shame). That is the ''Good" head from the oringinal set. Anyway, I'm not loosing much sleep over it. It's been that way for over two years of driving. I'm gonna BlackStone the next oil change and see if there are any bad omen's in the motor's blood.

One more question......Is that water jacket also behinde the threads for the GP? The reason I ask (I'm trying to justify ignoring the problem).......if there is a pinhole in the threads, I will see coolant when removing the GP, but it should not leak coolant into the cup when a GP is in place right??:dunno:D

Yes... I would agree with the location of the possible pin hole leak and not getting into the cup area. I bet you have a slight coolant leak around the thermostat housing or the housing to upper hose connection and it finds it way to the number one glow plug area. Try tightening up the upper hose or do a cold pressure test and look closely for leaks with a
mirror or some toilet tissue around the connections in that area. Remember the cold advance switch is behind the thermostat housing too. It could be the leak too when its a cold motor..... Things may not be as bad as they look...

Gary,
The head and top of the motor were bone dry. The only place I saw coolant was on the GP element/threads when I removed it. None is pooled or pooling on the head or around the GP.

What did the tip of the glow plug look like? I would look at it and pull a few others to see what they look like...if it's burning coolant, you most likely will be able to tell from the hot end of the plug, which would also tell you if it's in the pre-cup or not. Just a thought.

The tip looked like it just got wet with coolant. There was no scaling or evidence of coolant evaporating or burning on the GP tip. Other than being wet with the green stuff, it looked just like the other 7 glow plugs.
