Fuel tank woes!

Trying to weld up the hole in the bottom of my rear tank, and even on the lowest and slowest setting, I keep burning out more steel than I'm laying in!!!!

The steel is as thin as tinfoil, so I've been forced to say Awww, Fork it!-cuss
Looks like I have to buy a new rear tank.:mad:

So, Off to search for one of the write ups on the bronco tanks.
I read somewhere that the 88 model trucks use a different ohm sending unit. Is this true for the broncos as well?

At this point, I just want to be able to buy the parts, and assemble it.-cuss

how big was the hole to start with, and why didnt you just solder it shut???

someone on this sight used that stick putty that you knead then apply to fix a hole in a tank. He said it worked really well...diesel fuel soaked and all.

well I would suggest going with a new tank anyhow but when welding a thin metal its best to add a piece of thicker steel and concentrate your heat to it. Also you have to basically just tack the whole thing you can't run a bead. Also speeding up the wire feed will help cool your weld and the thinner wire works bette too. It takes a lot of practice to weld really thin rusted out metal. I welded up some inner fenders on a 67 GMC and it took a lot of time to get it right but I also wasn't worried about it being leak proof
