I am wanting to streamline and clean up my fuel system. I have read a little about putting on a Holley Red. But what components am I getting rid of? Is it like a gas engine where I am putting a block off plate and just wiring up a pump near the tank? What kind of filtering system do I need if I want to put it on the frame? Is it feasible to run braided steel fuel line from the filter straight to the pump?

Any info that anyone can hook me up with would be great. A list of parts and a what to do would be awesome. Thanks.

If you are gonna run an electric as your only delivery-pump, then for certain mount TWO of them in separate check-valve protected lines; such that, when one quits working, the other can be called into action with the flip of a switch.

"Y" the fuel line with each leg of the "Y" serving a pump, then "Y" after the pumps back into a single line.


Get into the habit of using Pump-A one week and Pump-B the next, to be certain that when one fails, the other is good to go.


Holley electrics are not the best choice; Carter makes a lot better pump.


There is nothing wrong with running braided stainless, or even new rubber lines, all the way.


The best thing you can do to bullet-proof the fuel system is to replace the electric tank-switching valve with manual valves.

So would I be better off just running the mechanical pump? If so is there a way to relocate the filter to on the rail and still be good to go? Is there a better than stock mechanical pump?

Best is to let the mechanical-pump be your main delivery pump and install an electric-pump in a "bypass" line, such that with the flip of a switch, the electric can take over.

There are advantages to an electric-pump other than running the engine; they are excellent for priming the system or purging air after running a tank dry; but, I don't trust them enough to be the main pump.


Carter makes mechanical piston lift-pumps that are a direct replacement for the factory-issue diaphragm pumps that come on the Cummins.

I am certain that, with a little research and measuring, a piston-pump could also be employed on an IDI.

What about a Walbro pump? Bosch pump? I come from the Mustang crowd and we use those pumps on street cars and have many many thousands of miles of service out of them.

Both Carter and Airtex make mechanical pumps for the IDI. I will call them up on Mon or Tue to ask about them. I am also thinking of maybe doing some propane injection, so upgrading the fuel system is a good idea to me.

Are there any parts from a Ford gasser that crossover to the diesels? Suck as water pump, fuel pump, headers, etc? As I am thinking if I could get an electric water pump that would be awesome for everything.

I don't know about swapping anything over to a 7.3 from a 460, but if you're going to run an electric fuel pump, run a Facet Duralift. They're made here in the USA and one of our members, RLDSL has run one for a few years with no problems. I've only had mine on for about a month, but my truck does seem to start more quickly than when I had the mechanical fuel pump.
