does the fuel return system go straight back to the tank, but does one of return lines of the injectors or pump need to be rerouted back into the feed system from lift to I.P..

Yes. All the fuel returns go back to the tank being used. That line off the fuel filter has a check valve in it. What it does is allows any trapped air in the filter to be purged back to the tanks. My filter never had this line and it runs fine but. Any air in the filter must be run theu the injection pump and out the top return line fitting.
