Drownin' in diesel
Has anyone mounted a golden rod filter under their hood before the factory filter? I am running WMO and apparently my factory fuel filter doesnt like it very well.

I have but not under the hood, under the cab. Which one are You using, clear shell or metal filter?
Now are You filtering the oil before using it? Do You run it straight or do You thin it? This combined with outside temperatures can affect greatly in the way Your engine will run.

I am wanting the clear shell. I can get filter for less than $5 each. It seams a bit large to mount anywhere under the hood but I don't want to knock it off under the truck. I am wanting to catch everything in a $5 filter before it gets to my $36 filter. If the filter clogs I can change it under the hood on the side of the road in less than 10 minutes in church clothes.
I just changed my shop filter setup tonight to a Golden Rod and Napa filter after. Both are 10 microns. I was only filtering to 25 microns on the last tank. Stupid Fram! I clogged up three filters on the truck before I got the oil out and refiltered down to 10 microns. It just cost me about $100 in filters for half a tank of WMO!
I was trying to run it straight but I think I will start at 50% and go from there. My Holley Red pump doesn't sound like it likes it straight either.
FWIW I have the clear shell exposed for about 2 years now and not a single scratch, but then again better safe than sorry.
If You do go with the clear shell and You decide to use the ones with water block I say You will be better off installing a fuel pressure gauge before the IP just to make sure You know when it is time to replace a filter, the electric pumps don't like to pump dry, not that the other pumps do but electric pumps last very little after.

go to filterbarn.com to get factory fuel filters. I got a dozen International filters for 9 bucks a piece. Then you can go politely tell Napa where to shove their 40 dollar filter

Filterbarn.com is a good resource for any filter you need. I like the goldenrods as a prefilter but I've never seen a good solid way to mount one. A mountable filter base can be had at Napa for under $30, along with $6-7 filters (and thats Napas price, I imagine filterbarn would be slightly better), in the 5-10 micron range. I intend to mount one on my driver side outside frame rail for diesel fuel sometime soon, and scrap the stock one altogether. I already have one on the passenger side, its so high up you can't see it without crawling under it, and it is mounted vertically. I do have a body lift so I was able to attach a bracket to lift it up higher.
