I am actually about to tackle my leaking filter housing. I am leaning towards taking the stock one out. There is a dizzying array of options out there for filters. I have seen where people have mounted them to the frame but they hang too low for my liking. I have two inline filters between the tanks and the fuel selector valve to keep the valve clean but I know it isn't enough.

Is there a simple option that works well?

Many move to this option. Other than losing your Schrader valve, which could be incorporated. .cheap altrnative:

personally I cant stand the stock filter housings. the only thing they do is filter fuel, evacuate air, and in a engineers mind, warm the fuel up.

I get racor or other units of the line and replace them.

Racor, you mean like this? I got that thing off the engine long ago. I kept the vacuum switch which is now in the block after the pump on the frame.
