I decided to do a little research tonight and found of a few things about my truck... According to the diagram from the ATS website, my turbo is the 085 ATS turbo. How old is this style of turbo and should I possibly look for a more "modern" turbo? I also started searching for thermocouplers so that I can get my pyro gauge installed and start monitoring my exhaust temps. I found out that my gauge (which is made by VDO) needs a "Type K" thermocoupler. Does anybody have a spare thermocoupler, or can you recommend a good place to buy one? The cheapest I've found is around $50 for the probe alone. Is that a good price, or can they be found for cheaper than that? I'd like to turn up my pump a flat or two, but want to wait until I have the EGT gauge hooked up so that I make make sure that I don't have a "meltdown". Thanks for any help or advice.

There is no reason to look for another turbo unless you really want a wastegated version.
I am pretty sure we can make that one lift the heads off if you want to.LOL

I may have a used thermocouple, but it may be hard to find. The garage is a mess I will look tho.

The only downside to the 085 kit is that it uses a small down pipe, in ways you're better off with the unboltable up pipe, where the 088 kit has the up pipe molded into the exhaust housing. However the 088 kit uses the 3" down pipe that significantly outflows the 085.
Instead of getting a different kit, why not find a machine shop to make your exhaust housing into utilizing a 3" Vband down pipe?

Could also change that exh side housing to a bolt on style also.

Now, I'm confused... I have a 3" downpipe already... Did the 085 use a 3" downpipe? :dunno

The 085 has a smaller downpipe? didn't know that. I assumed they were all 3" from the 085 all the way to the aurora.

the 085 is from 1985, so it is a 23 year old design. Likewise, the 088 came out in 88, and the 093 in 93.

Yes, if the turbo kit Im thinking about was in fact a 085, which im pretty sure of (you have me wondering though now), it had a 2 1/2, or there abouts, down pipe.

I went out and checked... The uppipe has two bolts that hold the exhaust pipe with the use of a flange to the turbo housing. The down pipe comes out of the housing and goes down (appears to be a slip connection of some sort). It is held to the engine block by a "L" shaped backet and then the exhaust pipe connects to that with a band clamp secured with two bolts. The tag on the turbo has two sets of numbers. The first set is H406269-96 (That number also appears to be stamped into the housing) and then on the tag under the first set of numbers is a little "box" with the numbers 1472 in it. I don't know what all that means, but I'll try to find out.

The tag number is the one, there may be a tag staked into the compressor backplate, hard to see.

The only other number I can see is the one "stamped" onto the housing. It says "AC 0 A/R .96" I don't see any other numbers anywhere...

I like the old ATS turbos. Mine is an 088 and I'm really not sure how that's different than the 085 version. If you already have 8-9psi with a load without turning up the fuel you are in great shape. I have a type K thermocouple but I replaced it because I didn't trust the readings I was getting from it. If you want to try it I will give it to you for free + the cost of postage. It shouldn't be bad but it might. These things especially without an amplifier box are very very sensitive to the slightest mistake in wiring of any kind. You can get a new probe from Omega Engineering but I can't remember what I paid for mine. How much is that stuff from Oregon Fuel Injection, they are usually very competitive and keep ISSPRO stuff.

I will check with Oregon Fuel Injection tomorrow. I'd be interested in giving the probe you have a shot... At least something is better than nothing right? Let me know what the cost is. My ZIP here is 97701. What is an amplifier box? I have a VDO gauge with two wires (wires are about 10' long... maybe a little more), but the wire broke off right at the existing probe (which is mounted in the downpipe behind the turbo housing). I'd like to install mine in the DS exhaust manifold. I don't know for sure if my gauge even works:dunno, but I was told it worked until the wires broke off.

If you do happen to find it, I will gladly pay you for it. I want to make sure that I keep this engine running as long as possible. It only has a little over 100,000 miles on it - Checked with DMV and unless the PO put an additional 100,000 on it in 8 months (6 of which he was in jail for a DUII) the mileage is correct at just over 100,000.

Mine will make about 10 PSI, but for a stock 6.9, you really don't want to go any higher than that.

But since I don't have a stock 6.9, russ is gonna set me up with a bigger compressor;Sweet
