Flatbed pics

I am going sometime tomorrow or Saturday to pic up a 12ft flatbed for my 89
f250. Im thinking about cutting it down to 9.5ft. Im also going to have to weld up a barrier in the front of the bed to protect the cab and to mount my lights and winch.

I was wondering if anybody is running a flatbed longer then the normal 8ft on a stock and if they would be willing to post pictures.

I would also like to see pictures of other flatbeds to help with coming up with a design for the hitch and the front barrier.

Any suggestions and pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the link in my sig to see my truck......I think its a 9' but its also a cab/chassis, so the rear half of the frame is straighter than a normal pick-up, so I've heard.

Thats a nice looking bed. I like the look of the 9fts over the 8fts, especially with an extended cab.

Would a 9.5ft bed interfer with hauling a gooseneck trailer? I dont think that I will be anytime soon, but my cousins got a hitch waiten for me if I want it.

Mine is a 7 foot wide by 9 foot long. It had a goose neck hitch in the middle with a door over it for hauling. I like the looks of it and it is very functional without being overly cumbersome.

discbrks, I am not sure that your dads superduty can handle the load it is carrying in that picture...... Reminds me of the time I had problem with the lights on my truck and we were pulling an empty 5x8 flatbed behind a CC DRW (The Enterprise) it looked like a skateboard back there, and you could not see the trailer...... could only see the very end with the tailgate down......

Ha, just a little aside- that reminds me of when I was working at Sears. This guy came in to pick up a pressure washer that he had repaired. I wheel it out to load it for him and he's picking it up with a lowboy flatbed tractor trailer. So we loaded it onto the center of the trailer and he throws this huge webbing strap over it to secure it....I just thought it was funny.

Can anyone comment on the length of the bed vs the gooseneck hitch.

I just need some more versitility then the stock bed provides.

I also had a great idea, Im gonna use a plasma cutter to cut diezel into the top part of my headboard and hook up some runner lights to it. Heck I might even go wild and hook the lights into my brakes.

the gooseneck needs to be just a inch or two foward of the centerline of the rear axle. the length sticking out the back of the axle is governed by the trailer. take a measure of the neck portion and that will tell you have long or short it needs to be.

alos to add to towcats measuring after you measure a trailer measure from where the ball would be to the corner of the bed and allow atleast 6" clearence on the corner for off camber stuff that will tell you how long the bed can be

all right, Ill have to do that. At the moment I dont have a 5th wheel and I was leaning more towards a pintle hitch style trailer. I just want to keep my options open.

i would go with the gooseneck. i would rather pull a gooseneck over a tongue pull anyday anywhere. with the horrible turning radius of our trucks now the option to jackknife a gooseneck into a tight spot makes things so simple. plus the weight distribution makes the ride nicer. just a though
