Ricer-Roni The IDI Treat
For the last year and a half I've been beating my head against the bumper trying to figure out why my filler neck mod didn't work. I tried gutting the rollover valve in the top of the tank and I gutted the filler neck, ran a 1/4" fuel line to the 1/4" copper fitting in the neck as a breather. Well, I got more foam than a quickly poured A&W rootbeer! After trying some tweaks that only made me the master of R&R the rear tank, I finally got that **** bum fixed today. Here's what I should have done when I replaced my tank two summers ago: A BIGGER BREATHER!!! Went to NAPA and got two (one for each tank) 1" heater hose elbow connectors part #9926. This goes in the grommet in the top of the tank (be careful installing so the grommet doesn't fall in). Got two (one for each neck) 3/4" copper elbows from Lowe's to be brazed/ soldered into the filler neck as far up as possible. I ran 1" heater hose from the tank fitting to the neck fitting (need between 3' and 4', get 4' to be safe). Don't forget the hose clamps. Now the 1" elbows require a bit more clearance above the tank and I put some belting between the tank and the skidplates so my dad cut some 3/4" spacers out of 1/2" ID pipe to drop the mounting of the tank. I used 3/8" by 2" bolts to replace the stock ones. Went by Flying-J afterward to fill the front and, with crossed fingers and prayers, test the rear tank. Got the front topped off and went to the rear and... it filled up quicker than a rut-crazed-weasel!!!!! I can't tell you how frustrated I was having to jump out with my 4X4 block to put the rear tire on and still trickle fuel in while two more rigs are waiting for me to fill up! Needless to say I am happy. When the weather warms up I'll mod the front tank although it isn't too bad. Now I need to lower both bolts on the spare carrier. The front bolt is so seized (half a can of PB Blaster and no joy) I can't budge it so I will get a new bolt/ nut set and then I can put the spare back under
Is this something anyone would like a tech article on? I've had the tank out so many times and through trial and error I've got it down. This has been written up on TDS as well. With the right fittings this isn't that bad. It's having it planned right the first time that makes it worthwhile. Let me know if a more detailed write up is wanted and I'll put something together.
It was amazing to hear the air rushing through the breather while fueling. I think you can do this mod for Less than $25 for both tanks. Just depends on the cost of the hose and the fittings. I think I have about $6 in fittings and I can't remember the cost of the hose. The bolts were free from where my dad works, as were the spacers.
This was one of those projects where I refused to let it beat me. And there's the satisfaction of wrenching on your rig and saving big bucks. I think Transferflow wants $150 or so per tank to do this mod, just for the kit. My labor was well worth $150!
