I just replaced the alternator on my 85 and noticed that the field wire is missing. The plug must have melted with some previous owner and they put in a new blade fitting on the stator wire and just cut the field wire at the alternator connector and at the other end of the pigtail near the solenoid.
Is this limiting my charge or hurting the alternator?
This is the second alternator I have put on the truck in 70K miles, but the last one was from a parts truck so I didn't know its history.
Truck is charging again, but only at about 13.3. Id like to see it closer to 14.
Second question is if I reconnect the field, does it matter where it taps into the rest of the wiring harness?
My thought would be to just add it to the main solenoid on the passenger fender well.
