E4OD

Does a tranny from -90 E-350 replace tranny E350-92?.
Friend of mine have what he claim to be a E4OD, the one with the gear shifter knob on arm, that fit my -92 E-350.
Motor in old style truck claims to be -90 7.3 IDI
Are these trannys interchangeable or not?.

I was under the impresson that Ford switched over to the E4OD in 91, in which case the 90 will have a C6 auto.

One thing you can do is look at the gear selector thing. Its the thing that has P N D 2 1, if its like that, and only has a 1 & 2 then its a C6 tranny....but if its like P N D 3 2 1 then it should be the E4OD.

Yes. They are the same.

Actually, I believe the switchover occurred in '89.

late '88 actually. I had a F450 with a E4DOA in it and it's a early '89 model. The truck ate a transmission yearly. My solution was to buy into a trans shop

I presume there is. ATSG manuals list the early E4DOA starting in MY'88. My exposure to Ford trucks started in '89(F450's) and I avoided the F350 like the plague due to the ford IFS's propensity to eating tires on towtrucks. F450's with the solid front did away with that but put the word "deathwobble" a common term

89 was the official date for the E4OD.. That was the big **** of a tranny.

Upgrades started quickly in 90. More upgrades in 95.

So, then the guy should be right, they are interchangeable.
Then there should be no difference in gear ratio, since final ratio is located in
rear diff, right?
Are they alike when talking about the electrical stuff , thinking about sensors like TPS / RPM ?.

Will it work right away or do I need some re-building ?.

Nope... I have P R N D 1 2 and its a E4OD, with OD button on the dash.. I know of a 94, and the OD button is on the shifter ***.

I just went to look. My E4OD has PRND21. It's in a '92 F-350 with the OD light on the shift selector. I believe I can lock it into 3rd, or rather go no higher than 3rd, by pressing the button on the shift selector. Then move the shift selector to max out in 2nd and 1st.

Electrical stuff changed after 95. 89-95 will swap out. 96 and 97 you will need to change the plug or the soleniod pack.
