Just bought a 93 f250 7.3 idi n/a having a issue where sometimes the truck will shift on its own like normal and sometimes I have to manually shift it because it will try and start out in 3 or O/D. The O/D light never flashes any help would be awesome !

I literally just went through something similar. Truck was actually in fourth, not third. It ended up being the MPLS. The computer couldn’t tell the lever was in drive do didn’t send grounds to the two shift solenoids to shift into the other gears while in drive. You can take the MLPS off pretty easy and test the resistances to see if the resistors or traces have failed.

Scan it for codes. It might have something stored.

Culprits for this. Transmission Range Sensor (MLPS), VSS, Tach, or TPS.

Check your brake light bulbs, also check the brake light switch. E4OD’s do wierd stuff if the brake light system isn’t in order because it’s connected to the trans computer
