drove a 6 speed

was out galavanting with the wife and saw an '02 F250 CC 7.3 6 speed with 71k miles on a used car lot so we took it out for a spin. i was very surprised to find it felt even slower than my stock '99 with auto trans. engine/turbo noise was WAY less on the '02 than my '99. they must have done some improvements with sound insulation.

also there was a weird vibe when running thru the gears, related to engine speed. do PSDs have DMFs? if so that would have been my guess, faulty DMF.

so i guess i don't want a 6 speed anymore, i want a built auto with a low stall TC. i was thoroughly unimpressed by the manual trans.

I think the 6 speeds came with a single mass flywheel. That may have been the vibration you were feeling. I rode in a 2000 with the six speed in it and it didn't feel slow when we were empty, so maybe something wasn't right.

i was kind of surprised, when i jumped on it i expected more. my old NA 6.9 4 speed felt faster.

Slow? really? My stock 2000 6 spd 7.3 would out run my brothers 05 6.0 auto. Must have been something wrong

something must have been wrong. it was a nice truck but not worth the 20k price they had on it. i think it was a farm truck which may explain the low miles. dings on the body and the floor of the bed was sagged out.

it may have had a miss which would explain the vibration and low power.

one thing i noticed was huge turbo lag between shifts. maybe some more time behind the wheel i would have gotten used to it. i like the failsafe of the manual trans vs the auto. seemed like the PSD needed a lot more revs than my 99 to make boost. i figured with the manual trans it would be the other way around.

20k are they nuts! I just looked at an 06 F550 cab-n chassis 4 door 4x4 fully loaded,alum 19.5 wheels w 80k for only $19,600 last night

That's a steep price tag. When I traded my '01 a few years ago I had a little under 100k on it and they only gave me $11k with several mods. My '01 Stroke was a 6-speed and I loved it. The throws were pretty short and narrow. I did get the trannie rebuilt since the input shaft what a little scarred for some reason. They do have SMFW. In stock form she wasn't that fast but wasn't too bad either. One of the problems is that you lose so much boost when you shift, especially when you're just cruising. Putting a chip or other fueling mod definitely helps out and makes it much more fun to drive.

Heck, used car lots are ALLWAYs like that. If they think they have something "rare" they'll stick it to you. There was a Craigs list ad for a '84 6.9 that had less then 75,000 miles!!! Seller wanted $5000 for it still!!!! (Not a lot, but still.....)

Driven a few six speed 7.3Ls and I would trade for one in a minute over an auto. That one had somethin' wrong with it.

Six speed rocks the slushbox in a 6.4L as well.
