ZF Trans Brake - Bearings going bad?
I just picked up a 1991 F Super Duty with a 460/ZF 5 speed and on the way home on a down hill run where there was a load pushing on the drive train it sounded like a roller bearing squeal. I could feather the throttle and take the load off and it would go away. As soon as it was pulling on a flat stretch it would be okay. The sound seemed to come from the rear on the trans area. I see this has a ZF park brake assy and there are 2 bearings in it. You could near the drive shaft ting when it stated to lock up a bit. I have to check ATF level in that assy. Any possiblilty this is not ruined if it was run low?
