Does this look like a good buy?

I live in Southern California, and have been passively looking for a Crew Cab dually. There aren't too many for sale around here, either on craigslist or auto trader. I found the one in the link which looks to be in decent shape and the price is fairly cheap, the only thing is it's a dealer that's selling it, so the price seems a bit low, more of the price I would expect with a private party. I like the fact that it has the banks turbo setup.

If it's as clean as advertised, then yes, that's one hellacious deal (especially by SoCal standards). It's almost a "too good to be true" deal. Like the ad says, though, that mileage could have rolled at least once, maybe twice. However, given the overall condition of the interior, you could almost convince me that's original miles. Tough to say, especially since if it's always been a CA truck since CA doesn't require inspections (and therefore doesn't collect mileage data)

It's at least worth a visit if you ask me.

Good tires, decent paint, 171k isnt horrbile 271 is a little high for my taste, already turbo'd, has an overdrive unit and i could be mistaken but it might be a E40D (with the D being circled on the guage cluster) i dont remember what my c6 dash looks like. 3000 is a good price by any standards . the only thing i noticed is the "water in fuel" light is lit up, might be something to inquire about. looks good

Nice price for a so cal dually with an E4OD and a gear splitter aux trans. Offer $2000.00 and come up if you have to but don't go in too close to the asking price. you might get it for your counter offer. Look closely for water damage like from sunken in a slat water inviorment some place. Flood damaged cars and trucks turn up round here too and tracking down the truth is tuff. Some flippers know how to "wash clean" the titles.

I looked it up on the map.. Its not a dealer but it is some kind of manufacturing place. I see no car lot or other cars placed anywhere. So what have they been in business doing for 28 years I wonder... I know the area well and its about 18 miles from my home.

I'm not sure what to think either. I kind of have a feeling something isn't right about it, but then again it could be legit. I'm not an any rush so I will definitely take my time and not rush into anything. Thanks for the feedback everyone. I guess I will think about it for a week or so and decide if it's really something I want to follow up on. I know most of the basic issues to look for on these trucks so they can't take me for a complete fool.

IMHO definitely worth looking at it...even if it isn't what you end up buying. Satisfy your curiosity. Personally I can't get over how awesome it would be with a Dana 60 hanging under the front...combo that with the turbo and splitter. Great daily driver material.
Is that a US Gear? I haven't seen a splitter/OD unit with a shifter like that myself...

look at it objectively.it's a 22 year old 2 wheel drive truck with a outdated low hp diesel (i know,i know,i love mine too.im just saying.) it's also the less desirable body style (like the 8th gen or not,it didn't go over very well back in the day,nor does it still today by most) how much did you want to pay? im sure he'll take more if you want to offer it lol.

Chris, that wouldn't pass inspection here.it would just be a yard truck fitting that description.those we can find daily for a few hundred.

That Banks air cleaner box! You have to remove 14 nuts and bolts to take it off. I finally ditched mine a couple years ago and went with a homemade intake.
Truck seems like a decent buy, all you can do is go down there and see what the deal is with it.

So to recap this from the first post. you have been looking for a crewcab but there are not many around your area... So why are you sitting on the fench about this truck. the price is right. the condition is right. It has an aux trans thats probably costed as much as the truck is listed for. Not very many owners will install these splitters or gv aux trans by themselves. Go look it over. Tell us what the engine serial numbers are and we can probably tell you what year it is. All idi engines look the same externally. Even the 6.9 looks like a 7.3 so only the serial numbers will tell you what sit is. Or if you have a couple of sockets in your pocket you can fit them to the head bolts and know but still wont know the year. Now it has the early non wastegated turbo. some like it and many don't. Its a low boost turbo but its a turbo anyway. You can buy and install a Banks wastegated sidewinder turbo any time too and have 13 lbs of boost.. Lets say the turbo, engine and trans are junk. All those are an easy repair or replacement. Its a crewcab and by the pics looks really nice. I do see some white on the passenger side doors and the front of the drivers side rear fender. Might want to check those out closely for damages. But please go look it over.

I don't care much for the 8th gen body style much either, but I want an IDI crew cab dually, so I am limited as to what there is out there. 7th gen crew cabs seem to be quite rare and 9th gen is only 92-94 for IDIs so, there aren't as many of those out there either. I could always swap out the front clip later on. For me it would be worth it if I could get it for maybe $2,500 assuming there are no major issues, otherwise I would pass and keep looking.

I'm seriously considering going to take a look. I'm already sold on IDIs, I like knowing that if something major were to go wrong, I can still get the problem fixed for much less money than the $10-15k repairs I hear about for Powerstrokes. I would definately consider a Sidewinder btw. I have an early Banks on my current truck, it's okay, but it still leaves much to be desired though.

Technically, just because it's the Sidewinder system does not automatically mean the turbo has a wastegate. I should know. My truck has the Banks Sidewinder system, but it's a non-wastegated turbo.
