My truck , before I bought it was used by a car lot to haul a nice big gooseneck wedge open car cauler , and before I put the turbo on it, I hauled my 5er down from Kansas City over teh Ozarks ( and back a couple times) grossing about 18k over some REAL nasty hills not on the main roads, but even running N/a i didnt have any trouble keeping up with an average of the big trucks on the hills. I figure when pulling a load like that, I really cant ask for anything more. Now that I have teh turbo, it goes a tad faster but honestly on those mountain roads, how much faster can you go? the curves are marked at 25 mph on most, which is as fast as you can safely take them in a vehicle that is towing... so exactly why would you want to go faster.... got a death wish?
I've climbed over the rockies WAY up there to Leadville , same thing ,as fast as the curves were marked. THese magazine jocky reading maniacs may think you need an Autobahn racer with a bed to hook up to a trailer, but its just not true. What I find ironic is those guys may fly down the interstate faster, but when it comes to the big mountains they dont really pull any faster, and when it comes down to pulling heavy loads, guess what, they are getting the same OR LESS in fuel mileage as we are ( they kick our old heavy sheet metal hinys when running empty, but it simply takes fuel to move metal, and every last person who isnt busy bragging that owns a newer truck is burning just as much or more fuel than we are to get a load over teh mountains. Ive been rather surprised I spent over 3 months on teh road a while back and spoke with a LOT of folks and it really surprised me what I found out from a lot of folks speaking HONESTLY about their rigs
5k isnt much of a load for these things, Drop to 4 for best mileage and roll ( 5th will have you bogging and flooring it using excess fuel, let it rev up comfortably in 4th and roll you will find yourself rarely shifting )
