Biggest limitation is tensile stress in the connecting rods and related - stress is going to increase as a rough square of rpm, so going from 2k to 4k rpm quadruples stress for example. Increasing from 3400 to 3900 (500 rpm) would increase stress by roughly 32%.
You also run into issue of valve float, where the springs are literally not strong enough to overcome the inertia of the valve train and close the valves quickly enough.
Further as mentioned above, there's less time for fuel consumption and injection, as well as possible resonant vibration issues and other problems, but these are less likely to be problems.
