I am going to look at a 1986 F-250 4x4 for a snow go-er and general trailer puller. Its a 1986 F-250 Reg Cab Long bed, 4x4, 4 speed, 6.9L of course. The current owner said the yoke broke on one of the axles that goes to the hub so its a 2wd as of now. I have not looked at the truck yet but I just wanna know how hard or expensive these TTB's are to repair? If it needs a yoke and a joint what am I looking at to fix it? The current owner already wants $2800 for it and it looks like a rip and strip model. But I am in need of a 4x4 and I want a diesel, IDI perferably and currently in my area they are bringing a premium. I figured with fuel at $3.30+ a gallon the prices would drop but not as of now.

Thanks

Do the spindles and everything need to come apart to get the driveshafts out of the front end? When I had mine apart, I was changing out ball joints so I had the whole fandangle disassembled anyway.
Many people consider the TTB front end to be junk. IMO they work just fine. Most people blame the front end for wearing the hell out of their tires when more likely it's all of the ball joints, tie rods, and bushings being clapped out.
I see the entire front TTB's for sale for $100-$150 around here, I even picked one up for free; the guy was tired of mowing around it. Finding a yolk should be prety easy. I'd try to find one at a junkyard that was already taken apart.

That seems way too high to me. Especially in need of repair. The work isn't that bad if you know how to do it. The axle will slide out through the spindle.

Went and looked at it. It was a total rag with a new engine and trans and he was basing the price on those two units. Not a straight panel on it, 4x4 inop, XL stripped as it gets truck. For that price it was a def. no-go. Thanks for all the help guys.

BTW, I am in the market for a 83-97 F-250/350 4x4 diesel. Can be 4/5 speed or auto, can be long or short bed, can be reg, extended or crew cab, and just about any color under the sun. Needs to be close to central NC and on the cheap side.

With these dang front ends. Everything gets a little bit loose and it all goes to the pot.

wow broken axle shaft sucks
dont drive it it can still cause more damage
i had one bust on the u joint (sounds like yours)
to replace it you need to disassemble down to the spindle
now you also need to know the axle
the 50 was on the cc trucks but swapped in some cases like mine
the 44 hd was all else diesel
and the 44 was 150
so you have 2 different shafts that could be in youre truck
as far as i can tell they are only avaible in the junkyard
so its a pain
if you do the job when you take the hubs off theres 2 snap rings internal and external the external is a female dog for sure
hope i covered it all

"central" NC? i dunno. but if its a good deal, its worth driving for lol:

('92 above)could need a another used E40D or could just be something stupid simple electronic.
handy with a wrench? could be worth setting another used trans in her if need be.he's got her priced right so if it where needed, you'd still be looking ok.(check your local salvage yards for used 4wd E40d's first.or figure out whats wrong with the one in there.) sounds like a fixer upper at any rate.but that's how it goes when ya buy cheap.

('89 above) this looks well cared for.naturally he's got her priced accordingly too.
often rigs like this end up costing you less in the long run,due to not needing much for parts, than a beat fixer upper for a much less purchase price.

('85 above) likely a pto dump.
depending on the condition of this rig,it could make ya back the purchase price quick by putting her right to work.

http://asheville.craigslist.org/cto/2083623272.html

('84 above) looks fairly well maintained for its year.seems like a set of new tires, and perhaps a few more things, she might make ya a nice old 4wd truck.priced right up your alley too boot.
go take a look at her.

(the '88 above) better call about this one quick, and go take a peek at it.it could just be a bad t-case or something much more serious.if your handy with a wrench however,it almost doesn't matter whats required to fix it at that price.dont delay though.

(year? above)
here's a nice low mile rig.likely last a feller quite a few years.
appears to be ready for work and play.solid and maintained well probably.
got that cash? might wanna take a drive too then.;)

http://boone.craigslist.org/cto/2130963407.html

('86 above) sure looks nice in the pics, and the price sure looks too.
warning; these are usually the trucks to walk around very carefully,to figure out just whats really going unsaid.often a deal too good to be true........;)

nice one owner/two counting his son.
she has some miles on her,but sure looks nice.
try talking this guy down 6-700$ and show up with cash in hand.;)

good luck!

First one I went to see in person, oil leaking from the oil cooler, inop 4x4 and the kid filled it with straight water and it as froze up hard.

The second one is a little steep for the budget, considering it though.

Third one I am considering but I lol'd at the $8 glow plugs

The two Asheville ones are a little far to drive, about 4 hours from me, but I am going to look into the blue one possibly.

The two Boone ones, one is again a little high for the budget set but the other one is going one the list. Still a little of a hike to get to just look at them.

Last one is a still a little high.

I sold a 1988 Mustang GT roller for $2000 and thats my basic budget for now. I am seriously debating that crew cab truck the more I look at it. I wonder what it would take to put a rollback bed on it :rotflmao .
