Truck: 1988 F350, Crew Cab, 4x4, 5 Speed ZF5, 7.3l IDI 213,000 miles.

Situation: Over pressurization in coolant system. Performed leak down test and air was escaping from at least cylinder 1 and pulled heads. After removing heads found coolant in cylinders 1 and a little bit in 5

I did not see anything major on the gasket as far as a blow out to cause combustion leakage and the head doesn't seem to be cracked. I am wanting to have heads looked at by a shop but don't know what kind of shop to look for. Anyone know any good shops around Camp Pendleton, CA? Also, is there anything else I need to look for that could cause combustion leakage and coolant in cylinder? Doesn't appear to be any cavitation in any cylinders either.

Should I remove pistons in those cylinders for any reason to look at cylinders? Thank you.

You should have put the piston at tdc on those cylinders and reran the leakdown. You may have cavitation holes in the cylinder wall. Now you'll have to do a visual on the bores.

Does the piston in number 1 look steam cleaned? Hard to tell from the pic. Did you pull the block drains before you removed the heads? How do you know that coolant isn't from when you broke the gasket seal?

dgr, I did conduct leak down test at TDC for each of the cylinders. I did not pull the block drains before so it could be from the break of the gasket. Piston in cylinder 1 does not look steam cleaned, It looks like the rest of the piston heads. How do I check for cavitation then? Thank you.

It's an actual hole through the wall of the cylinder. If piston was at tdc, I would guess it isn't cavitation. But you should inspect the bores regardless. I don't know if it is likely to happen below bdc. Hopefully someone else can opine.

No help on the machine shop. I grew up in North county

That coolant in cylinders is because you did not drain the block. Best take heads to shop and have them checked for cracks. Has anyone other than you pulled this head before??? Sure looks like it has come off once oe more times.
