Climate Control on a 2003 Excursion

For the past two days my climate control has been completely dead, although the fan kept blowing on high heat. None of the controls worked and neither did the LED's. (Of course the temperature was in the 70's for the first time this year). Fuses were all OK and secure. Today I started it up and it worked just fine. Has anyone else had this intermittent problem or should I just attribute it to some Gremlins in the dash. Is this a sign that the end is near or is there something that I should be looking for? If the unit needs to be replaced how hard is that to do and about how many $$$'s would I expect to spend. (It doesn't look like it is that hard to take the bottom of the dash apart and get to it - famous last words). Could you purchase one at a recycling yard? Is this climate control unit common to any other 2003 (or other year) trucks and/or cars? If it has been in an accident can the energy of the impact harm them?
