I've noticed 2 types of Mercedes diesels on CL...

Really nice cars that aren't cheap

POS that are even more expensive!

I agree with that!

Seems i've always had better luck with craigslist searching sacramento and reno areas... not as many crooks as the bay area CL.

I bought my ZF5 from a guy up in placerville I found off the sacramento CL. Seemed pretty descent. Guy clearly had a background in IDI's, gave me a good price too.

The one I looked at in tracy off the SF bay CL, thats a whole 'nother story!

It gets better the further away you get! I'm in a catch 22 right not, I don't have a registered truck to get parts to build a new truck to get parts for other trucks and not working much for another month, but I've been making use of my little car quite a bit!

It would be fun to see what he has, and if it is a total POS have several guys offer to stop by and hive him CASH right now! Then...****, no one shows up...

The early 603 heads liked to crack, if you can get a late head from Europe you're in business!

What he said. The "#14" heads have a tendency to warp or crack if they're overheated, but later updated heads don't have that problem....while the 603 isn't quite as bulletproof as the 617, it's still not a bad engine. I'd be all over that black SDL if I had the $$ -Drool

OK, I stand corrected! I have seen a few bad ones, probably all earlier versions.
Yeah, that makes sense...with the original #14 head, that's sadly not all that uncommon...but otherwise, the 3.0l 603's a pretty good engine. The 3.5. 603, OTOH...unless you're planning an engine swap or there's documented proof that the engine's already been replaced with one with the updated connecting rods, don't walk away...RUN
