I have a friend of a friend who works for Lubrizol who knows more about oil than anybody else I know, so I decided to ask him about CJ-4 versus CI-4 in pre 2007 diesels. I forwarded the previous link from here referencing that CJ-4 was not backward compatible and showed higher signs of bearing wear and he told me that was probably NOT a statement from Lubrizol. He also forwarded me this link, which as you will see is definitely Lubrizol's formal statement concerning the CJ-4 spec. He basically told me not to be afraid of "the new stuff" in "my old stuff", he was a little surprised that any of us would notice down in the "diesel basement". Yes, I told him to keep his newer, nicer, more complicated and harder to work on junk.

Enjoy

Note that the article makes note of the necessity of shorter drain intervals of the CJ-4, as compared to CI-4, and also notes the reduction of TDN .
