First off - BIG THANKS for the zillions of post/pieces of information to make us rookies keep loving our trucks!! Kudos to all the knowledgeable people who share :)

1983 Ford F250 6.9 diesel 2WDR AUTO - my current truck

What donor truck would be best to turn it into 4WDR? I could possibly have an '89/'90 F250 GAS 4 speed donor, good enough?

Do not want to go standard - hard to find a transfer case?

Later year better or stick to the 7 and 8 series?

Many will want the front Dana 60 which came in most years F350s. And, an overdrive transmission.

You will also need to be concerned about the gear ratio of your incoming axles...reasonable ratios are related to which transmission and tires you use.

Hard to find transfer case?

Yep. You can throw a bw1356 or bw4407. Ford trucks throughout multiple gens you can throw whatever puzzle pieces together for many items. I'd go bw1356.. A little smaller chain but there used to be an issue finding the yoke for the 4407 when you break it. I have both in my garage.. Going with 1356 for my build.

BTW, that 4-speed gas transmission will need a Diesel-pattern bell housing...even if you do decide a non-OD transmission is the way to go. You would also want really tall gears (1:3.3 or taller).
