I've heard that the 460 bellhousing is just close enough to the IDI to keep them from working.
Is there a way to just look and tell, or do I need to make a template to take to the junkyard with me?
I found a junkyard that deals in mostly trucks and 4x4's, but the crotchity old fart that runs it says no returns once you leave the yard.
He's got some five speeds, but he's not sure if any of them are from a diesel.
Is the adapter only held on by the two large bolts? Or are there more that I just dont see?

The starter on the IDI bolts to the adapter plate. On the 460, it bolt directly onto the bellhousing. That should be a quick way to tell them apart.

I know with automatics the bottom of the bellhousing is machined off for diesels, where it is complete for gassers. I don't know for sure if that applies for manual transmissions too.

What kind of salvage yard has parts on the shelf with no identification? When I bought a used E4OD, it had the complete VIN of the donor van on the transmission. All their other parts were labeled the same way.
