truck is up and running, pulls strong, the pyro meter gauge didnt get hooked up,threads are different,1/2 13 pitch bolts threads right in,the iron pipe bushing they sent with the kit didnt fit so the guy that did the install plugged it and moved on,looks like a pain to get at now, truck doesnt smoke anymore now than it did before, hardly any smoke, think its safe to drive home 2000 plus miles, with out it hooked up so i can get to my tools, im not carrying a load but the truck wieghs close to 7500 lbs, pulls really good now i can leave the traffic behind, also left the muffler off sounds really good, its like a new truck

Pyro needs to be put into the exhaust manifold anyways.
Flat spot on the drivers side between the rear two cylinders.

if you do not turn your pump up, and blow black smoke, you should be fine without a pyro. for a while.
as jasper says, it needs to be on the exhaust manifold.
downpipe location does not read right.
its your valves your worried about.
the turbo can handle the heat.
take it easy up grades. its not a contest :)

My Banks kit (1st Gen)has the pyro mounted in the cast turbo mount, pre-turbo, just where the two pipes come in from the engine. Good spot IMO because it reads the blended temps from both banks. Somewhat a pain to get to (don't know what setup you have) but only about an hour when I had to replace the pyro probe a few years back.

Driving without a pyro? Tighten the connection between your brain and your right foot and you should be fine. If you are getting light smoke, I doubt your fuel rate is cranked up much. Just go easy!

thats the best spot, most accurate reading you can get is from pre-turbo

Most if not all pyros on any turbo is located in the up pipe where both banks of cylinders blend. At that location you are getting both cylinder heads temps. A non turbo best place for a pyro is near the back of the exhaust manifold log. Why??/ Because thats the tightest area of the exhaust system so its going to be hotter there. The manifold for the trucks has a tighter bend in that area so it will miss the frame as it dumps into the cross pipe.

1200 miles in the last day and a half, never knew bertha had the potential of running that strong, run her easy she gains 2-3 mpg,and pulls hard from first gear to overdrive, cant wait to see how she does in the mountains and how she will pull trailers, will definitely have the pyro hooked up before the trailer towing, still stoked about the results

Turbo makes a huge difference. Never drove a NA IDI but mine has had some minor exhaust leaks and even being down a couple psi it's intolerable. Currently have either a exhaust or boost leak as it it real sluggish to boost over 5 psi and the thing is a total slug as about 5 psi is when it starts making power. Definitely get that pyro in before towing, mine will crest 1000 at the pedestal towing uphill and I back out to keep it about that temp. I've heard 200*-300* temp drop from manifolds to turbo and my early Banks has some long up pipes to bleed heat.

woke her up very nicely, was a pretty good trip for 25 yr old truck, clutch cylinder blew out 300 miles from home,it was nite time so drove her on home, next morning when i started her up she was blowing a lil smoke from around the turbo area, have to have that fixed and probably back charge the shop that installed kit and now i think the water pump is leaking, but the old girl has never left me stranded,i may be parting the truck out,i just picked up a 87 250 4 wd that probably could use a better running engine, the governor(my better half is pissed)she wants me to settle on 1 truck and keep it,but i told her if i get bertha stuck on these icy roads around here that would really suck need 4x4 here, probably wind up in dog house over this one

High altitude most definitely is the cause of more smoke. When I lived in Grand Junction, I kept my pump cranked back about a flat from the sea level setting. I would still roll coal over the passes on 70 but at home, I liked the relative lack of smoke.
