Are deep cycle batteries better than regular ones?

If what you're asking is are they better in an automotive application, the answer is a definite no. Deep cycles are specifically designed to be run completely dead and be recharged as needed, putting one in any automotive application would greatly reduce its normal life span. If you're looking for a battery upgrade for relatively cheaply, read into the G31 conversions on here. Your truck will never sound healthier.

Deep cycle batteries are meant for long, low draw applications. High draw, such as starting a diesel, would destroy the plates inside in short order.

Group 31s are a great upgrade, but they take a little work to drop them into an OBS (92-97) truck.

Better? No. Adequate? Maybe... but there is no reason to go that direction unless you have a special need for deep cycles. You'll pay more money for fewer cranking amps. Certain deep cycles don't hold up in starting applications, others do OK (dual purpose AGM batteries for one) but even if "OK," you're back to fewer cranking amps.
