Quite a few IDI owners are using a Gear Vendor O/D unit behind their trannies...and I have yet to hear of a complaint. I haven't had any direct experience, but it sounds to me like they're great little units...

while true--someone posted in tds some time ago--that you arent supposed to use a gv as a deceleration unit--if you did-you risked blowing the gears out of it--and it may also suddenly disengage--someone returned his--and they wouldnt fix it because of this issue--the us gear doesnt bother--its built different----

My only concern is if you were adding more then stock HP I don't think it would hold up for too long.

Impressive.

I thought I read somewhere that they weren't holding up to the big HP Cummins. I've been wrong before. :D

I don't mean to belittle their racing success but in the real world they are not that dependable. There is considerable stuff to go wrong with them: complex electronics so that it can tie into the existing electronics without setting a bunch of codes; it may only operate while going forward, so if something goes wrong in the electronics and it is allowed to engage in reverse it will self-destruct; ditto 4wd (it only overdrives the rear axle). The little pump inside that makes the pressure to operate the clutch is delicate. Years ago I worked on British and Volvo cars and this is the same (very slightly larger) overdrive unit that came from the factory on those cars.

To me, they don't make sense from an economic standpoint either. By the time you buy it, install it (even if you can do the install yourself there will be some sublet, like the drive lines), and even assuming that it does not fail and need money to repair it, it takes so long to pay for itself that it is not worth it.

IF (a very big IF) I needed such a thing I'd go with the US Gear; all gear power transmitting pieces vs the conical clutch that it hydraulically actuated in the GV unit.

US gear unit is built based on an old manual gear drive transmission, GearVendors uses the Laycock De Normanville unit, I believe it is the type P unit, basically a manually controlled 2 speed automatic transmission.

GEAR VENDOR OR US GEAR OVERDRIVE

Ive been runnig a Laycock overdrive for somtime.Very similar to GV overdrive
and im surprized that anyone would put these overdrives down.Ive been
running it hard for eight months and have had no trouble.Im pulling
a trailer with small dozer [10,000 lbs]regularly and the OD realy makes
a difference.

Ive had a US gear overdrive, there good,
But they have had trouble over the years also.Gear vendor had problems
with there clutchs and have changed the friction material.
Id go with the GV overdrive they just bolt on the rear trans
and the electronics are not that complex.

What model of laycock did you get? And what did it come out of? Did you use a GV adaptor or make your own? I need to work something out with my truck for a divorced laycock.

Im running a P-type laycock overdrive.Im using a GV adapter,but ive made
lots of standalone adapters and been selling overdrives on e-bay.
You have e-mailed me before over at dieselstop.com.
I was under the impression you had done a dual overdrive system?
