We found a mid 90’s Chevy dually in great shape minus an engine. I know very little about the truck so please bear with me on my questions. I do not know if the truck was a gasser or oil burner and I am not real sure of the year. I think the tranny is out of it so I have no idea which one it had. I did not go over it real thoroughly it was just a brief encounter. The information I learn here will determine whether or not I go any further with this idea. From what I did see the truck is in great shape. The tires look close to new and the interior looks real good. The paint looks decent but the clear coat is flaking off. I already have a 5.9 Cummins I had planned on dropping in a F350 chassis I have. This Chevy however it in waaaaaay better shape and more complete. If the tranny is gone I am assuming the transfer case it as well. I want this truck for highway hauling with the occasional need for four wheel drive. What am I looking at cost wise for a well built GM overdrive automatic tranny and T-case with what ever adapters I require to bolt it to that Cummins? Also, what other kind of expenses am I looking at to get that Cummins in the frame rails? Does it matter if it was a gasser or not? I can build or fab engine mounts if that is a problem. Anyhoo, I know next to nothing about Chevys and even less about dropping a Cummins in one. Any information would be very helpful. I will be going out there again tomorrow to pick up some parts I bought so I need to learn a lot between now and then.

I put a 93 Cummins in a 91 Chevy crew cab Dually 4x4 and it worked out great. I am getting ready to upgrade it to an early 98' with the P-type pump and very low miles .. I also converted the Auto 4L80E to the 93 manual 5-Speed and added the clutch pedal .. It all looks Original. I even installed a charge air cooler from a 2001 dodge into the Rad support in the Chevy and was able to center the dodge Cummins fan into the Chevy fan shroud .. LOOKS AWESOME ..... I am next going to be doing a 99' Suburban, and iI plan on using the original 4L80E tranny this time... I am not sure whether i will go with the 12 Valve or upgrade to a 98.5-02' 24 valve since they dont require much in the way of computer wiring ... I have measured out a Z-71 with no motor or trans in it and the Cummins will fit nicely with very little modifications to the vehicle and i believe that a 98 to 02 ford charge air cooler will go into the rad support but havent fully measured it to make sure at this time ... I have done a couple other conversions including a 93 ford F-350 4x4 Crewcab Dually as well as a 92 Toyota 4-Runneer that i put a 2.2 litre Isuzu diesel out of an 81 Chevy Luv and then i added a turbo to it and it runs GREAT and gets almost 50 MPG. That was quite a challenge to fit the oil pan around the front diff of the toy but after a few days of cutting and welding it turned out pretty well. Let me know if I can be of anymore assistance. Diesel conversions are my passion and i would like to tell you more about the 127 MPG that I got out of my 91 Chevy Dually Crewcab 4x4.
