little background story. buddy has a 88 f-superduty. 7.3 5 speed. 3 weeks ago he was having running issues. well never being timed, i took my meter over to time it. lots of grey smoke. could not get the thing to time. finally checked, no fuel pressure. bad lift pump. he got one and while we were installing it i noticed head gasket leaking coolant out the front of the gasket. so we put the pump in and started pulling it apart to do head gaskets. he uses this truck alot for work and around his farm. so it has to be right. sent the heads out to be checked while waiting for everything to come in. last friday i went over and got the heads bolted back on and torqued everything down. he put all the acessories back on and we quit for the night. monday i go back over to finish it up. set injection pump on, loosely installed lines and then started filling with fluids. got oil and coolant full. pulled glow plugs out to help spin it over easy to prime everything. got filter full and started to get fuel at injectors. had to go home for the night. next night i go over to try and get it going. first thing i notice is the puddle under the truck. coolant leak again. no pressure on the system. narrowed down to pass side front of motor. first thought was headgasket again(same area as before) but lucked out and it ended up being the bottom bolt for the tstat housing. pulled it out and put sealer on the threads. no more leaks. fought with getting it going. still nothing. couldnt work on it last night so tonight i go over, still not firing. checked for fuel, not much coming out of the bleeder. removed line to filter, harldy a squirt. unhooked line from tank to pump, pressurized the tank. line is clear, plenty of flow. removed fuel pump off block. went and dug out a spare used one i had. THE NEW PUMP HAD ALMOST AN INCH OF PLAY IN THE ARM! used pump had none. installed used pump, primed and she fired right up.timed it and took it out for a ride. runs better than it ever did.


moral, just because it is new, doesnt mean it is good.

btw, it was a napa lift pump that was bad outa the box.

Napa's quality has suffered as of late too as they were priced out of the game.

Anyone remember my post on my run with lift pumps? Got real quick at changing them on the side of the road. Sad part is the pump thats in my truck is the factory pump from my 1990 parts truck.

I bought a "rebuilt" distributer for my 83 f350 from NAPA (belden)When i rebuilt the engine. Couldn?t get the dame thing to fire. Thought I was 180 out so I flip the cap. NOTHIng. Decided to check the wires in the distributer. THEY WER NEVER SOLDERED ON. NOT ONE. Went to the JY and bought $5 used distributer and it worked fine.

Another problem I had was I couldn't get a bleader screw to seat in NAPA caliper. The seat was never machined

i never would of reamized the play without the used one next to it. the arm moved about .5-1 inch before acutally pumping. the used one pumped right of the stop. so the cam lobe couldnt push the arm enough on the new pump.

I think they are, but everyone makes a mistake sometimes. Good thing to keep in mind. Ive never gotten a bad mechanical part out of the box, few electric ones tho. My first rig was a 73 Datsun. I decided it needed plugs wires and points. Got it all put on and it ran on 2 cylinders, being 14 or 15 i was freaking out thinking i ruined it... turned out to be 2 bad brand new glow plugs. Took me FOREVER to figure out.

I open everything I buy while I'm at the counter anymore. I've been burned a couple times buying parts and someone returned an old part to cheat the store out of the money. Latest was a fuel pump module on a 02 f150 pickup. Wouldn't have even checked it if I hadn't of smelled old gas. Open the box and it's an old used fuel pump someone returned as never used. Time before that was a new water pump they never installed the impeller on. That was a fun one to figure out.

All of them (stores) are hit and miss imo. I too have never had an issue with anything mechanical but Ive taken back tons of alts and starters bad outta the box from Advance.

As far as I'm concerned, Napa went in the toilet when they abandoned their professional customers and went chasing after the do it yourselfer market to compete with autozone and started carrying all the cheaper lower quality line products that the autozone customers are used to purchasing like Felpro and lower quality hard parts and rebuilds to bring prices down,and stopped carrying the complete lines of parts that they used to and they lost most of their serious commercial customers to a handful of other smaller national and regional chain parts distributors like Car Quest , Bumper to Bumper and a few others who are more serious about staying in the parts business and providing shops with parts that they can install and actually be able to stand behind.
There's a few independantly owned Napa stores that decided not to follow the corporate model when they went down that road but they have to order outside the corporate delivery system to get the parts that their professional customers demand so they are basicaly nowdays, Napa stores in name only.
