Bingo! You get out this way and we start thinking half day driven is *close* . Heck, My sister is *close* and she's about 2 hours on the other side of where you will be :rotflmao I'm about smack dab in the middle of Arkansas.

The thing about that nifty little cold advance kick in the pants is , now, I cant remember about the ford manual, but most diesel manuals with an automatic cold advance will state very clearly to drive with a light foot till the thing warms up enough to kick down .They get very specific about that for a reason.

LOL It really throws me off how diffferent it is down there, but its interesting and I like ;Sweet

Anyways, I would think most of that would be because the engine is cold though. Who knows...I think a little advance wouldnt hurt things to aweful much.

No, it's not just because it's cold, but, as a result of. The only reason they break the cardinal rule going over the max advance is to make it easier to start the engine when it is bone cold. They know full well it shouldn't be driven on at that advance, but an ice cold diesel needs a little help to kick off and run for the first 30 seconds or so and that extra advance helps keep the emissions to a minimum during that rough startup period.

when my timing advance is on it feels like mine has so much more power, my dads 7.3 which is kinda mine now, seems like it has a ton more power than mine i can burn tires threw 1st and second in his and even catch 3rd, but in mine i can barley even get it to spin firstcookoo only things i done to his is advance timing cols air intake, it has factory exaust and hasnt even had the fuel turned up and it will out run mine, mine has dual pipes ram-air intake and turned up fuel, so i think im going to advance my timing or wire the timing advance on or something lol

If the info I have is true the inline pumps dont have as much advance capability so the initial is higher. Also being DI makes a huge difference as already mentioned. I can make that JD get enough power to shuck the trans if you like, if it has an inline pump.

Russ, are you saying that inline pumps arent as good with their internal advance curves? If so it would kinda support what I've heard from cummins owners, being that if I heard right, VE pumped cummins have a better advance curve than P7100 pump cummins (inline pump vs. rotary), so they get better fuel milage.

The tractor I was driving today had an inline pump and boy did that thing fuel like no tommorow. It looked like it had one of those cummins version of a smoke eliminator (increasing fuel supply as boost comes in), but you could hammer that thing and blotch out the sky. I was going through a small town, and was doing that just for giggles as people were chuckling and giving me thumbs up LOL.

Anyways I think the big reason the moose and DPS pumps do so well with power is that they mess with the advance curve in the pump....but that is a progressive system so maybe starting off more advanced isnt the solution.

Justin, I'm in Eastland, about 31/2 hours west according to mapquest. When you are down here we'll have to get together if you have the time. Maybe you, 65sixbanger and I can have a mini meet or something.

I've been reading this thread for educational purposes and was hoping I could interject for a minute. I'm putting my truck on the dyno tommorrow. I was contemplating hotwiring the cold advance for one of my pulls to see if it helped. I saw justin was wondering about dyno results of a such a test and then saw following responses against such a thing. Now I'm not sure I want to do it. Would it kill my truck to do it for one run. I'd happily post the results if it's possible.

Iv'e been running mine as far advanced as the pump will go for the last month and a half. I have not notices an appreciable power increase, but the smoke has increased and the mileage decreased. I just put it back to the scribe marks about 300 miles ago and noticed an appreciable drop in smoke and increase in mileage without a percieved loss of power.
My thought is that the ability to capitalize on the increased advance is dependant on the condition of your injectors. If they pop off at the incorrect pressure, the advance is just going to give you poor spray early.
That is my theory on why my smoke increased without power. I still have the original factory injectors. :puke:
THe other thing I noticed with very advanced timing is that when I started it cold with the timing advance on, any load on the motor (letting out on the clutch) made the motor go dead silent (no clackity clack) and black smoke rolled out of the tailpipe, even without giving it fuel. Now that I have retarded it some it behaves and sounds normally when cold.
I should point out that the f-250 in my sig is gone and my current 94 only has about 150K on it. I don't know if you could get 300K out of original injectors or not.

Sorry guys I'm an idiot. I made the wire, took it with me and then totally forgot to use it. I used my runs trying to figure out which gear got the best output. On a side not though, my friend with a 1993 turbo IDI as well, only real differences being his pump is up all the way and he advanced his timing a dimes width. He made 20 less HP than I did but he made 40ft/lbs more than I did.
