Check the IDM. Get one that is known to work properly. HEUI system needs proper oil level and pressure to fire, so check for any oil leaks. Aftermarket cam sensors can be defective, check all connections for the system including the harnesses that go to the valvecovers and the ones that are under the valvecovers.

Check to make sure the wires going to the CPS arent exposed and shorting out against the motor.. Just had the same thing happen on a 99 7.3 and had an exposed wire shorting to the motor..

The IDM (injector drive module) is seperate from the ECM. The valvecover harnesses can look good and not be good, especially since they are exposed to all that heat; after 12 years and all those cycles, they do go bad. Should be replaced on principle. Replace any and all questionable connectors and harnesses.

Yep, those need to be replaced just on principal, also check the oil level in the HPOP, make sure it is full and not draining down.
