Besides really freakishly big for a pickup?
The 466: 29" from oil pan rail to the top of the valve cover. 41" from the rear of the head to the tip of water pump. 14" needed at rear for width of head.
The 8.3 is a half inch taller and 1.5" longer than a 466.
There's a whole slew of trans chices. Just depends on what you're looking for.

A few years ago I started a P-pumped DT466 swap in a Super Duty. It was going to be a pro-street diesel theme. That engine compartment was actually the biggest one in the F250/350 line up. It was going to need a 3" deep bread box from the top of the firewall, and a new section of floorboard for the tranny hump. Basically, if you approach it like a drag car, setting an engine back in the chassis, you'll be fine. Dont expect to pull off a valve cover without lifting up the cab a few inches. A body lift will help....some.
Either engine has some absolutely insane power potential. Figure your hp goals, and the torque is roughly 2.5 times that. You can pull it off, but it's no easy feat. PLAN AHEAD.
Another idea. Buy a dirt cheap beater that's like the truck you want to put it in, and hack that one up. That way, any mistakes, and re-welds get figured out fefore the real deal.

That's a good deal. The Allison, if it's the MD3060 that I think it is, is worth $3k by itself. VERY sought after trans for the Med Duty truck guys. In my opinion, the best auto you can get, with a mechanical engine. The down side for a pickup, is the size. It's a big ol gorilla, and really heavy. That's why I was going with an AT545 for mine. Not the ideal trans, but for my needs, it was going to do just fine.

That trans is worth that much? My parents are pulling it out of their totaled RV. I said offer $5000 for both, should it be higher?

Yep, they are $3-4k at wrecking yards. Private party ads, I've seen for $2-3k. The engine is worth 1500-3500, depending on the situation.

hey folks, I am putting together my new project -8.3 and a eaton 5 speed FS4205A in a 89 gmc 2500 ext cab. frame was from a safetyclean type box van. 5 and 10 lug axles like 3500HD chevys. it takes a lot of fabrication and the dog box had to be cut out and "redesigned" at best. i have shortened the frame and used a dana 80 air-ride with 3.31's out of a ford style party bus. the 8.3 came from my buddies at the scrap yard out of a pusher bluebird bus for 500- runs excellent and came with an allison mt643 that i sold for 300-so 200 in a 8.3. i know the fs4205a is puny but i may put the rto6613 or rt06610 in.

This was a MAJOR UNDERTAKING at the least. I didn't mean to steal your post or anything, just wanted to give some input on the swap. I have put 371 detroits in 55 f350 fords with 10 speed and than a 13 speed roadranger and than a 7 speed,350 chevys in about 20 different cars,trucks,golf-carts,etc. A deutz 6 in a 3500 chevy, a 800 HP compound turbo 5.9 cummins in a 86 chevy crew cab-That WAS BAD-A$$-, a few 4bt's in different goodies like the 69 blazer that was just sold on feebay,a v4 wisconsin in a homemade motorcycle with a saginaw 4 speed, a 6.2 diesel in the 65 f100-nice truck i drove for 9 years, a 429 in a 66 f150, and so many more that are long gone. just trying to say that it is a lot of work but sometimes it is worth the effort. Just jump in there and get it done...
