I have the 6.9l in my turck as the sig says but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the 7.8l ford diesel.... I know absolutely nothing except that it is in a 1989 L-8000 dump truck with a 5 speed (zf5???). I'm tring to figure out if it was any good, things to look out for, etc. thats for ANY info you guys can supply The search pulled up about all of 6 threads...

i have a 6.6l diesel which is basically a twin to the 7.8, minus a JWAC and some minor changes, i believe they are the same block.

They are reliable, low on power and they have a real nice sound to them. They were made by ford tractor operations in brazil. I highly doubt the 5 speed is a zf-5 becuase most 6.6/7.8 have the SAE 3 bell housing,

Good Luck!!!!

I heard they were originally in combines. Still see a lot of L8000/9000 Fords on the job. Why are you asking about it?

Sounds like it is about the same size as a DT-466? Is it a 6 or 8 cylinder? Anybody got a picture?

I drive a 7.8 from one end of the country to the other every day. Stays above 10 MPG in my F-800, and is a damn fine engine if you ask me.
I was told by several people to stay away from it, and find a truck with an 8.3 cummins in it.
I fart in their general direction. I love this engine.
As to fitting it in a pick up, good luck.
I also have a 6.6, but it's in a parts truck, although the parts truck runs and drives beautifully.
