My 7.3 idi is stalling shortly after driving but will start and idle perfect even at high rpms. Took the filter off when it died and it only was half full of diesel. I have new gas tanks all new lines even changed the fuel pump again . Any ideas ?

You aren't getting fuel to the filter. Look before the lift pump - between the tank and lift pump.
1. Check the rubber hose loop right at the lift pump.
2. Check the fuel tank switchover valve.
3. Check the lines to the tank
4. Check the connectors at the tank
5. Check the pickup in the tank.

Does it do the stall only after sitting overnight? And then after the stall, you crank crank crank and it finally starts? And then if you drive it the rest of the day cutting it on and off, not letting it sit more than few hours, it always starts right up and runs good? Then does the whole thing over if it sits for a day or two?

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like the pump internals are gummed up. Please remove the filter and replace it but... Fill the new filter with any brand auto trans fluid. Then get the engine running till you hear a different engine running sound and shut down the engine. What your trying to do is get the atf in all the injection pump passages and into the injectors. Let it sit like this over night. Next day drive it hard to flush out the gum in the pump.Bet that will fix the posted issues. Also start running a fuel additive like Stanadyne or one of the other brands this site recommends. they keep the injection system clean and lubed. Today's fuel does not have the cleaners or lubes in it to protect our pumps. Even the red off road "farm fuels" are not using the normal sulfur diesel any longer. If you find any jet fuel it really is diesel but it has NOTHING to lube the pumps with. Its very dry so run some lube in it..

If the fuel filter is half-full after driving it, it's NOT THE IP!
The only way for the fuel filter level to 'drop' is if you are getting air sucked in to replace the fuel being used.

Also, you are wrong about the additives in ULSD - when it's made, it may not have any lubrication value, but additives are blended in by the time it gets to the pump.
Extra lubricity additives may help, but pump diesel does contain lubricity additives, at least in the USA.
(As an added note, they will often use biodiesel as a blending agent at 1-10%, because of it's excellent lubrocity properties. Your diesel pump will say it contains <x% biodiesel if it's being blended in)

No hard starting or hard when you shut it off no matter how long it sits. I have replaced every hose from the feed to return including the filters and hose clamps. Could it be possible to get air inside through the filter housing ? Is there a any type of sensor or fuse that controls the fuel like a cranking sensor ? I'm getting plenty of fuel through the Schrader valve idle and high rpm and she will crank like a new one no matter how cold . It seems like something went out because I drove form Texas to Pa .About a couple hrs from my destination, It started blowing white smoke down the mountains when I let off the gas and quit when I gave it gas . Pulled off to get fuel and it died so I bought some Howes diesel treatment and starter fluid and made it .

What about the vacuum switch on the filter housing could that go out and get air ?

If you have any leaks at the housing that’s your issue, most common suspect is the fuel heater connection, it has an internal oring that deteriorates.

That would be referring to the part of the fuel system that is upstream of the pump, this is the part that sees suction instead of positive pressure.

This thread was all over the place till he replied in post #8. We now know he does not have air intrusion on any seals on top of the engine correct?

So now we are thinking he has a problem on the suction side of the lift pump? I wonder how much fuel is in the tank when he has problems? Think it's lower and he has broken shower heads in the tanks?
