7.3 idi hard start runs 3 minutes and shuts down

I have a 1990 250 with a 7.3 idi. Its hard to start then dose runs for two minutes and dies. I've changed the fuel filter. I keep it plugged in because it needs a glow plug relay. I think this is fuel.

Probably air intrusion. Check your return lines. If they’re wet where the lines connect to the caps on top of the injectors, you should replace them. The return line kit isn’t expensive. @Thewespaul has them.

when it shuts down do you still have voltage to the IP solenoid?

How and where do i check the voltage

Front drivers side of the injection pump. Have someone turn the key on and listen for the click. Disconnect that wire and it should click again.


There are two wires on there. One turns the IP pump on and the other advances the timing when cold. When it is cold, turn the key on and check both wires for power. When it dies, check that one of them has power.

What happens after it dies on you? Can you get it restarted?
