Automatic I assume?

How old is the injection pump? Injectors? Has it been timed lately? Fuel filters changed lately?

How about your air filter? With 8 pounds of boost you should have plenty of power, and it seems with the black smoke your getting plenty of fuel to it. Seems like you need more air, or you've got a timing issue. What axle code do you have, and what kind of grade are you trying to go up?

I think that static timing is your biggest problem right now. You really need to get it timed by somebody who has the right tool and knows how to set up an IDI. You can experiment with your timing, but unless you get it right on, it will never be 100%. Try rotating the pump towards the passenger side about a dimes width. I've seen some pumps go up to 1/4" away from the mark, but no more. Too much advance is worse than too little.

The problem is, and I know of this first hand, the timing mark on a replacement pump it not always the same as the timing mark on your original pump. Lining up the marks will get you close, but as Mel said, it won't get it exact. This is the reason I have spent money on timing tools. While mine was right on by ear, I didn't even have a timing mark, so I was lucky and I would rather be lucky than good many days!!! :)

If you can't find the axle code (on the ID tag in the door opening or under two cover bolts on the diff cover) how fast can you go in second gear? My rig wirh 235/85-16 tires will go just under 50 mph in second gear and it has 4.10 gears.
