300 6cyl to Detroit 2 stroke swap

I have an 1989 F-150 4x4 with a boring old 300 L6 in it. I was looking and listening to the Detroit 2 stroke diesel engines and i love the way they sound and they'll pull a frickin' house down.. So i would very much like to do this swap into my F-150, How much work would it be? and how would the front suspension hold up with that much weight on top of it, and could i keep the tranny? its a five speed now if that makes any difference.

You'll need to find one that fits. I'm guessing the 53 series would work best. But they came anywhere from a 2-53 to a 24v-149. Dunno know about the tranny. I personally would want a 10 speed to benefit from the rpm range but you would at least need to match up the bell housing. (how they say to drive a detroit: 1) slam your hand in the door 2) floor it) And as far as front suspension goes- beef it up!!!! Detroits are heavy

well, a 353 would be your best choice....maybe even a 471. You will NEED heavier front springs, but with the $ you're gonna spend dropping the detroit in, you might as well go with a D60 and F350 springs and hangers.

The detroit 2 strokes are pretty much indestructable from my expirences with them in teh corn-binders lol

For a half ton I would find a military 3-53 with the aluminum block or if you replace the front end with 1 ton stuff you can go with a 6V53 with aluminum block to save weight or a steel block.(around 1100Lb aluminum and 1500 for iron).The 6V53 fits anywhere a big block fits and go up to 2800RPM where the other guys only go up to around 2400RPM.Also,DD had single cylinder engine too.1-71s and such.Used in stationary generators.Talk about a tiny supercharger.If I was going to do a 1/2 ton I would try and find a rare 4-51 Valveless just to be different.You read that right.They don't have intake or exhaust valves.The head is just there to hold the injector.

4-51 valveless, thats funny. I have only seen one in my years of wrenching. The 71's will be too tall to go under the hood. a 53 can be run at 3100 all day long. the frame on that f 150 will be the problem. and the mazda5 speed might last around the block, a zf will be the minimum, or a t19.

I am glad we all agree on the 53 series! lol.

Nothing will ever give me morning wood like the sound of that 6V71 detroit idle lope first thing in the morning. You ain't got your manhood until you have hear that sound at 430 am! It will put hairs on your chest!

It may be hard to find rebuild parts for a 353 GM......but the good news is, once you do one rebuild...it will outlast ANYTHING you put it in! I know where there is an original 671 inline, not a 6V71 V6, that has almost 1.5 million on it....and will fire up when you take the key out of your pocket to unlock the door.

well,piston,sleeves,bearings,injectors,rockers are all the same for a 3-53 to a 8V53.That is the wonderful thing about a detroit.Standardization...well some what....and the head for a 3-53 and a 6V53 are the same.

I think the 4-71 is gonna need a shoehorn to fit under the loadstar's hood. V6-53 seems to work best. I have faith in the 1/2 tonner's frame. Gotta ditch the twin I beam for a F450 monobeam and put a RTO 6610 trans in it. Here;s a video of one in a Bowtie with a Cummins.

Trust me...if anyone out ther could kill an engine, it was me when I was 16!! I blew up a 2.8 V6, put two rods through the block af a 350 4 barrel, killen ANOTHER 2.8 v6, and ruined a 300 Inline Ford!

I have sence learned to ease up, but this should attest to a detroit's toughness!!!

that's a big 10 4 on the toughness, come in! It litterally tugs ay my heart to hear that engine scream on it's way out....but I know that somewheres there is another 2 stroke Detroit disturbing the pease, avengine it's brother's death!
