Hi Oil burner my 4x4 start making gear chatter heading down hill so pulled over and checked shifter because though it pop out of gear. put in 4 high no problem drove home. have all position on shifter but seem to only work till it heats up. So what do I need to replace in the transaxle or should I rebuild shifter first then trans axle?

Transaxles are what front wheel drive vehicles have. The fact that it’s only doing it in reverse makes me wonder. Will the truck drive forward in 2wd?

Yes drives forward all gears and shifts fine but when you coast synchro wine or gear chatter. The shifter has a lot of slop because it is 30 years old. I am sorry about calling the transfer case a transaxle just tired when I wrote the post:dunno. I fixed an old 87 F250 4x4 but that shifter lock up. I have 4 high and 4 low works in reverse and all gears right now but could be hard part failed in transfer case. I am hoping for shifter gave out, Thanks

Side Of shifter is bent and bad trans mount must of bent going up dirt hill and torqued shifter over so, it is not long enough throw for two high so it slips out. going to pull shifter and mount tomorrow and fix it:). Thanks

Something to note, there is not much tooth engagement of the input gears in the tcase on the high side.
