Wrong place to ask but, yes, the 1990 Cummins, commonly called the 1st Generation Cummins, is purely mechanical, requiring absolutely no electrical influence to run. (or start, for that matter, providing it can be roll-started)

Actually, the 1989-90 are better than the later versions, having a larger injector bore and larger injectors than later versions, along with a few other advantages, such as a DUAL-CHAMBER diaphragm vacuum-pump.

1st Gen. are 1989-1993, with inter-cooling beginning in 1991.5

2nd Gen., P=pumped, 1994-early 1998

Both above versions are purely mechanical.

The 1998.5 until present are various versions of computer-controlled electronic engines, plagued with a host of non-mechanical headaches, such as in-tank lift-pumps and electric injector-pumps, along with computer monitoring of engine functions.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
let's not run him off yet. Maybe he's lost & wondering round. If we take him in & be nice to him maybe he'll chunk that Cummings & get a IDI.....:rotflmao :rotflmao
I just had to say that...devil made me:rotflmao

When I bought a 97 Ram with the 12v cummins, I had lots to learn and I found that if you want to learn about the cummins, look for FAQ's and tech artical posts in a cummins forum. Not to downplay anyones experiance or knowledge, but this is the basement where you will get loads of info about the international idi motors and related components.
I no longer own the Dodge, for I learned that the only good part about the truck was that it had a cummins in it. The rest of Dodges engineering ideas are still crap. You can wash a ****, you can polish a **** until it shines, and you can wrap a **** around a really great motor, but its still a ****.
Anyways, if you want endless info about the cummins, I suggest reading every tech artical and FAQ in these forums:
http://www.cumminsforum.com/
http://dieselram.com/
http://www.turbodieselregister.com/

Good luck, I hope this helps.

well i just got done talking to scott at destroked and he said that the np435/ cummins 6 were used in a delivery van combo and cummins still has the adapter plate and clutch to make all my ford stuff work. The reason it can work i guess is the clutch is a little over 2 inches thick. So what do you guys think should i put the first gen in or an idi? The cummins motor in question has had 3k bucks in bearings etc done to it.

Do what you want, the Cummins has a higher potential for high HP and modifications, the IDI is a known quantity it has cheaper parts reliable, etc. The Cummins may fit better in your 70s Ford especially with the turbo....not sure on this though.

That is a good point.

Look under the hood of one of these trucks with the V-8 International and it is wall-to-wall engine, with no space between the fender-wells and engine; the valve-covers almost lay on the wheel-wells; you cannot see the ground under the truck.

Look under the hood of a Cummins truck, and there is a foot of empty space on each side.

I can tell you the clearance from the fan to rad on my truck is 4-5 inches that's with leaving just enough room for my 3 inch dp at the firewall--add two more cylinders ? You gotta be into the firewall.

correct but remember cummins of this era are mid mount low drop so there is no issues there at all.

If you want to do it, I think it can be accomplished. The downpipe is a non issue. All cummins have a pass side turbo in the middle of the engine. The most difficult issue would be stuffing it into the engine compartment along with radiator and fan clearance. If you go this route, may want to consider elect. dual fans. Personally, I think this is all blasphmous talk. I believe that building an IDI to make 300HP is a bigger accomplishment that doing a cummins for 500HP. Anyone can do a cummins for 500, 300 IDI and your doing some homework.

I'm not really sure that 300HP is doable reliably out of an IDI. You're going to need at least a turbo, intercooler, hot injection pump and (possibly) injectors. You'll need head studs so you won't blow the heads off. With studs and an intercooler, you may can safely boost at least in the mid teens, or upper teens even. Much more than that you probably need lower compression pistons or rods, and upgrade the valvetrain somewhat. Low 200s at the wheels is a definte possiblity. Darrin did it with just a Non gated Banks turbo and propane injection, all stock fuel system....but then he blew a head gasket. Took him awhile though and that motor had been subjected to 13-15psi of boost for a lot of miles.

I don't recal saying anything about reliability and cheap. I am just a guy that hates seeing everything related to diesel performance always going to the cummins or duramax side. That damn diesel power magazine should change their name to cummins power!!!! I like the fact that IH IDI's aren't well known for anything, but they are the ones that started this whole diesel pickup craze. I am a big fan of cummins, I am just sick of seeing their engine in every article that I read in reference to diesel trucks. I prefer to do things the hard way. Not trying to make an argument, but for the money of a cummins plus the extra cost of the buildup, an IDI could be built to run real strong.

correct. I wonder though how much really can you get one for. I can find the cummins cheaper over here for some reason. Not only that but a cummins will fit much better in here i think. I am starting to get discouraged as the price of diesel is 3.70 here and premium chevron 92 is only 3.40. With as little as i drive the truck im honestly thinking about bagging the whole diesel swap thing and just putting that into restoring what little left i have to do. Ive already got the dana 60 to swap in along with my plans on doing selectable lockers and nice chrome bumper and mile marker 12000 pound hydraulic winch. I am planning on putting in my gulf coast bypass system this weekend so i will take pictures and post them here when i am done.

Anyone know who to ask questions about these old ford 360 fe's?
