Hello,

My name is Rick and I am new here, I was refered by two people ofrom Ford Truck Forums.

Here is my story I bought this truck
1986 F250 Extended Cab XLT Lariat
Long Bed
5 New Tires
6.9 Diesel
4x4
4 Speed Manual
Came with Gear Vendors Over/Under Drive unit
Banks Turbo
5th Wheel Unit that I wont need (anyone in CA want it you can have it)
Also has a 5th wheel braking unit.
Has rear air bags
Inside is in near prefect condition
AC works
Came with a nice grill guard.
Only thing this truck lacks is a face cover for stereo unit, has a cracked windshield and two minor dents. Paint is not perfect, but good enough for me.

Cost: $1400 for the truck.

I bought this truck about a week ago now, drove 300 miles from Los Angeles to Modesto CA. I dont know the first thing about diesels so I was going on pure looks (the guy didnt say he had a gear vendors or turbo so that was a good surprise). On the way home 100 miles back, it over heated on me, turns out there is Oil/Water in the radiator. When i drove the truck, it ran smooth, the turbo worked and i felt it, i tried the shifting kit and that worked too (owner showed me how to use it).

So I spent $400 getting my truck towed 200 miles home. I didn't mind, still too excited to get my truck asap. I took it to a mechanic three days ago and he told me I had a loose rod and there was something wrong inside the engine and it needed to be replaced. Told me it would end up costing me $8,500 with new engine, parts, labor, warranty and other misc items like oil, fluids etc... I was shocked, no way have that kind of money.

Immediately i started calling tons of places for engines and engine rebuilds. Lowes price i got for an engine rebuild was $3000. still a lot for me right now, had to borrow money to get this truck. So I went back the next morning to pick up my truck, the strangest thing happened. The guy was REALLY nervous for some reason and I wasn't coming at him with anger or accusing him of lying etc... The first thing he said was "Hey you were supposed to call before you showed up" i thought that was weird, first i never said i was going to call, i just said ill be there tomorrow morning to pick up my truck.
Then I asked him to go over the problems with the truck because Im not good with cars so I will forget everything, he proceeds to write down the Estimate Invoice. Now is where things went strange/but better. He starts explaining the "knock" i reported while driving, he said its bad ball joints in the front passanger side, which is where my girlfriend reported feeling bumps (didnt tell him about that, forgot). Then he tells me that it has a blown head gasket and that will need to be replaced, I ask "so the engine has a loose rod or something?" and he kinda gives me a "im sure it does, its where I believe that sound is coming from, it has a turbo so it probably put too much pressure in there". I say ok, and then he proceeds on writing me up on a different paper the cost of the new engine and why it will cost me $8500. But this time it was more like "here is another option" instead of the first time when it was more... "You have a blown engine, you need to replace it". So I took the paper work and took off, drove 4 miles home, smoooth ride, but i did feel a knock whenever i would hit a bump on my right front tire, i did this on purpose now to make sure it was coming from that side and sure enough i was able to create the sound at will. But there was still a rattle coming from underneath me. I hit a red light, and decide to hit the clutch, rattle gone. And this too I was able to control at will, every time i hit the clutch rattle disappeared and engine sounded PERFECT. By the time I got home, it started to reach the middle of "Normal" in the temperature so i shut it off. Too it to a mechanic later that day and he said the engine is not blown, but he needs to check on saturday to make sure and to not quote him on it (i told him what happened with the other guy). He said he will first check the oil cooler, then head gaskets.

And now here i am, waiting for Saturday to find out the verdict...

So far I have spent about $2200 on that thing. I will see how much i spend on Saturday...

Welcome to the forum!!

Before you get too worked up thinking you got the shaft on the deal, there are a few very important things you need to know.

Oil in the water can be caused by a bad o-ring in the oil cooler. Simple fix (less than $50 in parts) Most likely thats not why it overheated, but the radiator could very well be plugged up.

A blown head gasket is pretty simple to diagnose. You take the radiator cap off (with the engine cold) start it up, and let it get up to running temperature. If large amounts of bubbles or gas starts really pouring out of the fill neck, you may have a bad head gasket.

A knock in the engine could be caused by a stuck or leaky injector. The procedure for diagnosing that is to loosen each injector line, one at a time, and see if the engine knock goes away.

Ball joints are pretty cheap and easy to replace.

Run away from that shop that wants you to bust out the credit card for an $8500 engine R&R. They probably don't know crap about these engines...

Nice truck, BTW!!

I think you only have an issue with the oil cooler o-rings getting hard... Then the oil leaks past them into the cooling system... Not a big deal at all to fix. To remove the oil from the cooling system just use Dawn dishwashing detergent. Run it with tap water and flush it out. You can do this twice. Then flush it out as best you can and refill with coolant and distilled water. Any oil thats left hidden in the engine cooling system will get over into the coolant recovery tank. Just skim that off with a paper towel and its good. As for the other mechanic that wants to replace the engine for $8500.00... Tell him to take a hike... Thats what a highway robber does to people with problems away from home... They need to be shot with a crap gun... Creeps like that do so much harm to the repair industry.... We get nothing for payment here for the help we offer. The collective knowledge here surpasses any dealership anywhere. Actually do dealership wants these trucks any longer. More money can be made repairing the power strokes and nobody left at the dealerships know much about these engines... They are very simple to fix and cheap to keep running. At the very worst you may have a blown head gasket... If so then make sure you replace both head gaskets when you go in for one... Otherwise you will be back in for the one you didn't do...

I may be interested in that fifth-wheel setup, too.

I've got a full set of factory service manuals for you if you would like to do a trade...

Do you have a 5 speed trans... If so the rattle you hear is peobably the dual mass flywheel... They can make lots of noise when they get worn...

Ok i let the truck run for about 10-15 minutes and there are air pockets coming out every 3 seconds one right after the other. There is a lot of oil in the radiator maybe they are blocking the flow somewhere? Or maybe this is definitely a head gasket problem

all it is is two bars bolted into the bed from front to back next to each wheel well. One bar at the end of the bed (not the tail gate end) and two metal hook/bars from off the side of the gate. I will be adding a bed liner so i wont need this extra stuff. I do want to keep that extra brake system though.

Thanks for the updates on who the shop was... Its not the shop I thought it might be.... The clutch noise could be the throwout bearing too. usually the dueal mass flywheel isn't used on the 4 speed trans. Are you running coolant.. If not the radiator may have some pluggage. A leaking head gasket will make the coolant look like it has oil in it because the diesel gets pushed into the coolant as combustion happens.... Not all of the diesel burns during ignition. If you find that you need to replace a head gasket its best to remove the engine and do it on a stand. I can lone you my stand for this. When the engine is out do the oil cooler too. You will have easy access to it and no better time for that job. Try draining down some coolant so you can see the top of the radiator ftubes. If they have corrosion buildup around the tubes then its cleanout time or replacement time... Only using distilled water will keep these radiators from the tap water corrosion buildup.... I don't know of the shop you took the truck to either but they seem like they were looking to make a killing off of you...

Rick, welcome to OB. Great place with a lot of guys that have worked on these IDI's for years and years.

No worries, I had a headgasket failure and bad oil cooler oil rings on my crew cab. No biggy. With the turbo, and a 6.9, the headgaskets were bound to give up sooner or latter due to the smallish 7/16th head bolts. Too bad the guy who sold you the truck did tell you that before.

I just finished replacing the headgaskets, adding ARP headstuds, a Banks turbo, and an oil cooler rebuilt to my 6.9. Lost of photos of it in my webshots gallery in my signature.

You'll have all the help you need here.

Thanks for your reply. I heard about these studs in the Ford truck forums, through lots and lots of reading and a Victor Reinz head gasket (supposedly the best?) so i went ahead and ordered them about 3 days ago. Can you please click the links below and tell me if i got the right parts? I typed in my correct info and thats what I came up with.

Also if you know of a better price etc...
