    That is the mechanical fuel advance, without you will experience lower power levels. Need to replace IP to fix.

    Your problem is the clutch switch. It is set for r12, it can be adjusted for r134, simply unplug the wiring and adjust the screw out a 1/4 turn.

    The caps with a release lever won’t draw fluid back from bottle. The lever shaft is not sealed.

    Torque to 35, tighter can cause problems, such you have now. Tight is good, but tighter is BAD. Always torque to manufactures specs, they did their research.

    Overheating

    There are 2 sensors on the head for temp, the upper sensor is engine and the lower sensor is for the hot light.

    Old fuel. Should you run it or pitch it.

    Just mix some Marvel Mystery oil additive and run, only thing you need to worry about is algae. I was a truck driver for 30 years, we never wasted used fuel.

    DO NOT under any circumstance put cold water on the IP, it will freeze up. I believe your IP is tired and needs replacement, personal experience many years ago with my 92

    Glow plugs

    The controller you need to replace is under the alternator, behind water outlet.

    Overheating in the afternoon in the summer after replacing fan clutch, & OEM ford Motorcraft thermostat.

    Sorry to mention something simple, but it sounds like the temp sending unit.

    1989 OBS F-250 7.3 IDI longbed pickup in San Diego, CA

    Needs new glow plugs, the resister type, that will fix the slow start and smoke. There isn’t any pump in the rear tank, the only pump is on the right side of the motor.

    The lower sensor is head temp, it is there to prevent cracking the head or blowing head gasket. All it does is turn on the hot light when the head overheats

    A good block of wood and a 8 lb sledgehammer will do the trick. Alternate sides strikes will loosen the spindle.
