    The Oilburners hall of shame

Scott Tremelling - Nixon Transmissions in Jackson, California This guy was recommended by members of a Facebook page associated with these trucks. He quoted me a price for an E4OD delivered to my house and I gave him a deposit. I had to hound him for months to finish my transmission. I had to...

    F-Super Duty Chewing Belts

I had a belt problem on a 94 with the 4.9 6 cylinder that I couldn't figure out. All of the pulleys looked fine, lined up, with no wobble. One day I decided to change the water pump just because I knew it had a lot of miles on it. I never had a belt problem after that. The old pump must have...

    1993 F-350 tow rig

Over here in California I spent around $800 or $900 to bore and hone the cylinders, buy new pistons and rings, and get the rods pressed on.

Cleaning flywheel bolt holes in crankshaft

Okay I completely over thought this. A 3/8" diameter nylon bottle brush with brakleen sprayed on it worked very well. I used three all together. Hardly any brakleen made it into the engine I'm sure. A .40 caliber nylon bore brush would have worked well too.

What Gear Oil Do You Run in Your Diffs...

The way I understand it is that if you use 75w-140 that it must be synthetic and synthetic usually doesn't need any friction modifier added. It should say on the bottle.

Cleaning flywheel bolt holes in crankshaft

Tin foil shield where? I guess the oil pan is only open to atmosphere through the crankcase ventilation. Hopefully that is enough to let brake clean evaporate. I think I'll use a nylon bottle brush because I'm worried a wire one might lose a piece inside. It's better to let the locktite harden...

Cleaning flywheel bolt holes in crankshaft

I just removed my flexplate in preparation for a ZF5 swap And noticed that three of the bolt holes were leaking oil through. How do you guys go about cleaning these bolt holes so that the loctite will seal next time? Do you spray brake cleaner in there and let it get into the oil pan? Maybe...

Does anyone have the Spicer part # for the center ball on the front driveshaft? Is it 10018440?

    Radiator mount threaded washer

I'm pretty sure I bought all of the parts through LMC. They had a diagram with listed part numbers. It was pretty pricey though. When I get home I'll see if I have the receipt with the part number.

    Little Trick for Fan Removal

I took a piece of 1/4" plate steel and cut it into a long wrench that fits around the water pump bolts. I made another long wrench to fit the fat bolt. Works much better than the cheap tool for rent at the parts store that always wants to slip off.

ZF5 Single or Dual Mass Flywheel?

Has anyone else had reliability problems with the DMF? I just picked up a ZF5 that I am going to swap in. I will be towing about 5000 pounds through the mountains so I want reliability. But I am also willing to pay extra for the quietness of the DMF, as long as I can rely on it.

    Matching Flywheel Balance to Flexplate

I appreciate all of the help that everyone has been giving me with my E4OD troubles. But now I have found a super duty with the ZF5 in it and I am seriously thinking about buying it to do a conversion. I had the motor balanced when I built it. Will a shop be able to balance the new flywheel to...

    Hot Transmission

Well, I just had the same problem again. This time while towing my trailer in very cool weather, around 60 degrees. It was fine for the first hour and a half towing on flat ground, After I got into the hills the OD slight started blinking again and the transmission was getting hot. Even on...

    Vibration at 1500 RPM

Motor has roughly 6000 miles since I rebuilt it. The rotating assembly was balanced by the machine shop. The harmonic damper and the flexplate was included in the balancing. The harmonic damper is old and has who knows how many miles on it, but the rubber looked good. The flexplate is the old...

    WTB ZF5 and Accessories

I'm looking for everything needed to convert my E4OD truck to a ZF5. Specifically, a diesel 4x4 ZF5, clutch linkage, pedals, shifter arm, etc. Located in Northern California.

    Hot Transmission

Do you guys recommend that I flush the transmission or would just draining what's in the pan good enough?

    Hot Transmission

It seems like that might have been what happened. I was turning the OD button on and off kind of frequently to help me get through the curves and grade on the mountain. I feel like that had something to do with it.

    Hot Transmission

Assuming that was the code, would that have been a temporary condition because of the high heat? is it something that I need to worry about or will it rectify itself if I change the fluid and fix the cooling system?

    Hot Transmission

So a couple of weeks ago I was pulling my trailer up the mountain and it was over 100 degrees outside. Everything was fine until I got to a particularly long, steep part and my transmission started getting too hot and the OD light began flashing. I had to pull over to let it cool. I ended up...
