    Starters?

Delco direct drive starter is listed as having been used in 83 and 84. You CAN still get them today.

    Starter

Snicklas, Those are BOTH gear reduction starters. The "open nose" is a bit easier to get in and out (at least in MY application) but they are both "torque amplified" starters, replicating two different manufacturers' (I think Mitsubishi and Denso) design. The DIRECT DRIVE starter looks like this:

    7.3 idi throttle Cable

FWIW, the after-market cable on our 6.9 broke a week ago. We were able to find one at the local pick-n-pull (can't beat the price, as it was FREE), and lay them side by side. OEM is a noticeably heavier inner cable and housing. Much smoother operating throttle, as well. The after-market was a...

    Well this sucks. Injectors

We ordered a set a month ago from thedieselstore.com (Midwest Fuel Injection) at the $32.00 price. They came through, but really had to scrounge to come up with eight, pulling the last of them from three of their different warehouses. It didn't sound like they had any more stock. Glad I grabbed 'em!

Coolant leak - Block heater, head gasket, or cracked block? Help!

Funny, I just had the EXACT same thing happen last week. An 86 motor, transplanted into a 79, was leaving a 12" puddle from under the starter. I also was making plans to do the head Gaskets soon. It was actually coming from the upper radiator hose, at the thermostat housing. Tightened the clamp...

factory turbo for you all? who needs it ?

I'll watch for the pictures. If we can stuff it under the hood of our 6.9 powered 79 f-150, we'll make an offer.

    Stanadyne Injectors

Hi Guys, Has anybody used Stanadyne 780430 injectors? I have run across a set new in boxes for a very low price, and may grab them just for spares, if they are decent. Are they "coded", like other manufacturers are? They are for a late 86 6.9 with a 4 speed. Thanks for your thoughts.

    injection pump pressures

A year ago we tried a BWD pump. Pep Boys had them for $500.00, and I had a 25% off coupon. What is not to love? That was a big mistake. The first one we received had horrible heat soak issues. We took that one off and returned it for another one. It sprayed fuel from a crack near the plunger. We...

My truck's big brother... If only mine looked that nice.

    Pull starting... Any tips?

Man that's awesome, I would've loved to see that lol Thanks, I am too. It really was perfect the way everything went That's a good idea, but I don't know if I could justify the cost just because it normally isn't as cold as it's been (here at least). It was only a couple degrees above 0...

    Pull starting... Any tips?

Got er going and got home. Thanks guys! Put a tow strap on the front and then the mighty little 2wd V6 Dakota did the pulling and to my surprise everything went perfectly. Put it in 2nd gear in 4 hi since the parking lot wasn't cleared very well and it surprisingly grabbed when I let out the...

Well that gives me hope. What gear and how fast did you get it going before you let out the clutch?

Build Thread:: 1979 f150 7.3 IDI Conversion (Old Ironsides)

Sure thing, it's good to see what my other options are for the future (even though my radiator was new when I put it in). Gotta love a good ol coolant washing, I got mine when I was changing my block heater and forgot to drain the block :puke: 2300 should be plenty, though it may provide less...

    Pull starting... Any tips?

Hey guys, It's 5 degrees with a wind chill of -12 right now. I had the truck plugged in last night, started right up this morning and came to school no problem. That was at 7 am, and I finished up at about 3:15. Went out to go home and no start:mad::mad::mad:. I usually drive it during lunch...

Awesome, that is great to hear em run for the first time. Your first start was a lot better than mine, she took a good bit of ether because the IP and injectors were old and it had sat for like a year. The rest of the stuff looks great, I like the fan setup you've got. I'm going to have to redo...

why are these trucks so rare?

Yeah that is interesting. I only recall seeing one OBS dually idi (had the turbo diesel badges, I would presume it wasn't a stroke) since I've had mine. I have to admit though, I didn't really know much about them until then, so I wasn't exactly looking for them. Up here it's a majority super...

Yeah, that's what it looked like to me. I had the driveshafts from my donor rig shortened but I forget exactly what I did for joints. I believe that I used whatever was on them already except just replaced them. They fit in the 9" and d44 yokes just fine, so it shouldn't be a big deal for you to...

Good progress, it's coming along nicely. Are those the drive shafts from the 79 or the donor rig? Just curious which you ended up using, I don't recall seeing it mentioned anywhere in here.

    Injectors in my 7.3

Come on now, that's not fair to say. He's a very helpful member here and an asset to the idi community. He answered your question, so there's no need for the harsh words. Anyhow, if you're looking for performance then I'd recommend replacing your injectors with ones from Conestoga diesel or...

Need injectors on 93 7.3 turbo idi

I got a set of 8 rebuilt injectors from Pensacola diesel before I had ever heard anything about them, and my 6.9 runs like a top. It idles smooth and has great power, so that's what I would recommend. I paid about $150 for a set of 8 and could not be happier with them.

Nice start! We are the proud owners of a nearly identical conversion that we picked up as an already begun "project truck", except that we have a "T-19" B/W instead of the ZF. Even without the five speed transmission that you have, we run a solid 18 to 19 mpg on the highway, so If that is what...

    Harbor freight comp testor.

The GP adapter did not fit correctly on the $35.00 set, which was easily fixed by shortening it by a quarter inch. We did that, used it, and it worked fine. I thought the "expensive" Harbor Freight set worked fine.

    53 Studebaker 6.9 project

We did a swap of a 6.9 with a Borg/Warner T-19 into a 79 F-150. There was no practical way to get the donor f-250 6.9 radiator into the F-150, so we ordered an all aluminum three row (from ebay for $200.00) and it has been fine, after having survived the Chicago summer (upper 90s). I think the...
