LOTS of oil puddled in valley cover; Turbo oil drain?

Well I ended up buying a duramax... That thing is freaking awesome but that's another story. I tore into the IDI this weekend because me and a couple buddies are gonna turn it into a trail rig. The thing fired right up without even breaking out the battery charger. runs really rough and still...

LOTS of oil puddled in valley cover; Turbo oil drain?

Well, mechanical pressure gauge confirms it. 0 oil pressure at warm idle... Oil seems to be leaking from the dipstick tube area again, Since I mopped up the valley pan, there doesn't seem to be any more oil accumulating there, that may have been how much my brother spilled trying to fill it.

LOTS of oil puddled in valley cover; Turbo oil drain?

The leak originates below that point. The oil feed line is still clean. I went out with the intent of fixing the tensioner and found he crossthreaded the pulley bolt. Once I get the water pump turning again I will run it and try to track the leak down.

LOTS of oil puddled in valley cover; Turbo oil drain?

I've run mechanical pressure gauges in the past and never had one leak inside the cab either. Only when the plastic line melts against something hot, and thats out in the engine bay. I'll get the Isspro just to match my pyro. Found a bunch of oil in the turbo inlet, another symptom of oil not...

LOTS of oil puddled in valley cover; Turbo oil drain?

Ehh, its supposed to get up to 11 degrees tomorrow. I'll work on it then. Regardless, until I did some reading on that oil pressure switch, I still thought it was an actual gauge (albeit very prone to electrical fluctuations and loose connetions). I'll be ordering an Isspro oil pressure...

LOTS of oil puddled in valley cover; Turbo oil drain?

Thanks for the input guys. Its -15 out there today, so I'm not doing anything on it today. I'll get my mechanical gauge on it as soon as its at least in the teens for temperature. My brother is the one without a vehicle to drive, so I don't really give a crap if it runs or not right now...

LOTS of oil puddled in valley cover; Turbo oil drain?

Gary, have you seen the oil pressure gauge go straight down to 0 at idle? I think the gauge is still reading correctly, since as soon as I goose the throttle it pops back up instantly. Then I was reading something about the sensor actually being a switch (even though it drives the gauge), so its...

LOTS of oil puddled in valley cover; Turbo oil drain?

Did some searching, and contacted typ4. Still not sure what all there is to the turbo drain. Also might not be the biggest problem.... Oil pressure drops to nothing when you let off the throttle with the engine warm, and the engine stalls. Also my brother screwed up my belt tensioner somehow...

LOTS of oil puddled in valley cover; Turbo oil drain?

All of the sudden, my truck is leaking a lot of oil on top of the engine. as near as I can track it, its coming from the turbo oil drain, leaking upwards of a quart every 100 miles. The only thing I can think of is the sudden cold snap has screwed up the turbo oil drain somehow. That's about the...

Large oil leak... From dipstick tube?!?!?

simply pushing the dipstick tube back in until it seated in the block seems to have solved 90% of my oil leaks! The rest of it is the front main which has been dripping for quite some time now. I had 5/8" RDT on for just like 60 miles and it was enough restriction to blow the dipstick tube...

Large oil leak... From dipstick tube?!?!?

I recently got tired of all the oil that was getting into my turbo inlet, an installed a RDT, (got tired of that even quicker and put it back to the intake), but I used too small of a tube and developed a big oil leak. I figured it was my rear main from the way the oil pan was decently clean and...

I appreciate the effort man, :hail now I just gotta take a trip to the scrapyard.... And find a few days to allow for the truck to be down if I screw something up and end up needing a new pan...

    Studly advice

Try threading in the studs finger tight without chasing the threads first and I bet it'll go about half a turn. I tend to use moly lube on the block side of the studs too, just cuz there's usually plenty of it in the little packet ARP includes. Torquing, as said above, correct sequence is...

So a DIY rebuild of a DMF is possible.

I bet #7 was pretty tough.... Did you have to squint real good or even close one eye?

    Oil Level

I don't do all that many 1000+ mile hauls, so it's unlikely that with normal oil consumption, my oil level would suddenly drop. If it did drop more than 4 qts in 1000 miles, it would be cause for the "oh sh!t" light to come on anyway (hole in the pan, or worse). For me, the level switch would be...

    Oil Level

^ Good point! I would guess about 2qts would be in the galleries/ draining back at a time? Either put the sensor in another inch lower or only activate it without the engine running. Key on, engine off, maybe can tie it in with brake and ABS lights somehow? Or ground it when cranking, and...

    Oil Level

That's not what it sounds like. It is either open or grounded. If there's circuitry to be had, it is within the sensor body.

Jaluhn, did you have a sensor in mind? Seems to me there are some that are made to mount through the side of a tank via a bulkhead connector.

    Oil Level

As posted earlier. Full is 4 5/8" from the pan rail. Looks like exactly 1/2" per quart on the dipstick (full to add 2qt is exactly an inch). The sump does get smaller towards the bottom though so that makes it less accurate. If we can get a measurement from the transmission mount surface to a...

    Oil Level

I'd want the sensor level with the "add 2qts" line on the dipstick. How far inside the pan does the OEM sensor extend? Also, what's the thread size approximately (or exactly, if you happen to know off the top of your head).

Maybe it doesn't make too much of a difference, but I think that drilling the hole with some oil still in the pan would help to suspend any debris that do escape the grease, and wash them out the drain hole when you change the oil.

^ Inb4 somebody hollers at me for that suggestion. Disclaimer: You take full responsibility for damages caused by the getting metal shavings in your oil. That said, I wasn't the one who came up with that method, and I sure won't be the last one to use it. It works great, just be careful.

Grease the drill bit. Give it like 1 turn with the drill, clean the chips off, regrease, and repeat. Then change your oil and get a filter magnet.

I was just thinking of doing something like this for my truck. My oil consumption is still quite high, and it worries me when I check it and its 3qts low.... The factory switches sound like a real easy option too

Kent Moore meter WORKING NOW!!!!! Woot!

Looks like a sudden tug of the wire out of the plug could bend those contacts away, like if someone snagged the wires on something, that's the only thing I can think of aside from simply decades of use...
