another thing is to make sure the groove on the balancer is clean. i have had this make mine act up. i posted a video of me using my tech time a while ago and just remembered it
only downside i see. cant get grease into it. on semi trucks there is a seal on the top side of the bearing. when you grease the lower kingpin, it will push grease into the bearing.
is that before or after TDC? 18 degrees BTCD is way advanced. 18 dgrees ATDC is even worse. did you have the engine at full operating tempature? the cold advance needs to be off to be timed.
i set all mine between 9 and 9.5 degrees BTDC
You need to setup a c6 behind that test stand, with the output yolk locked solid and a transbrake on it, to load the engine some. Lol. My local carb shop has a 355 Chevy with a glide behind it set this way to set up vac secondaries quickly
yep, sand some paint off number one line, enough to get the line clamp and the ground clamp hooked. if it still is going nuts, try it on cyl 4. you can time them off cyl 4 also.

might be able to wire in one of these under your dash. this is...
did you get it figured out? does your tech time have the timing light also? i love my tech time cause if i cant get a good crank reading from the pickup i switch over to the timing light and do it that way.
you can get a new square cut oring for that, and install it without pulling anything it takes some practice, but you can fish the oring under the hat after removing the center bolt. yet it only picks up a little bit but it is possible.
