coolant filter seems like a pita.

FWIW I installed a coolant filter bypass style without any ball valves. It just seemed like too much clutter. With the system cold and the filter up high in the engine bay I doubt you would loose a bunch of coolant if you removed the filter to change.

6.9 factory 7.3 ats installation questions

Here are some pictures of the factory turbo and its components. Your CDR should have a stem extension that is removable. http://mid-atlanticema.org/wp-content/uploads/93-94-7.3-IDI-Turbocharged-Diesel-Engine.pdf

Turbo time thanks to head gasket leak

The plug at the rear of the block is a common place to tap for turbo feed. I used that spot for my oil pressure gauge. It is pretty close to the exhaust. I have header wrap on my up pipes and the gauge works fine. I think the plug toward the front ends up under the motor mount.

Need some insight on 6.9 problem

I was thinking fuel was leaking past the o-rings under the return cap. I thought it was the injector that was wet. Does fuel bubble out from under the return cap? At any rate, once you remove a return line cap it is unlikely to seal without new o-rings.

Need some insight on 6.9 problem

The return lines daisy chained between your injectors are probably leaking if you messed with them.

    First Owned Diesel

I like it. Those Alcoa wheels are nice. I would like to find a set myself. Do you have any aftermarket gauges? Usually running a turbo it is recommended to have an EGT (exhaust gas temperature) gauge also known as a pyrometer.

    First Owned Diesel

No 6.9 came with a turbo. In '88 the 7.3 came out. It was essentially a bored out 6.9, still without a turbo. In '93.5 a factory turbo was an option on the 7.3 IDI, and was an ATS turbo but had the Ford logo on it. ATS badged turbos were available aftermarket at the same time and that is what...

To grind down welds use a cutting disk on edge on your die grinder. You can concentrate on the high areas until it is just proud of the surrounding metal before switching to a sanding disk. You can see what you are doing as the work isn't hidden by the disk and you can avoid excessive thinning...

    Need ideas on oil cooler

Bolt torque is based on the diameter of the bolt. The bolt size and the size of wrench to fit the head are different. All the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI oil coolers use 3/8" bolts for front and 5/16" bolts for rear.

    Need ideas on oil cooler

The front header bolts are 3/8" and torque should be 24 ft-lb The rear header bolts are 5/16" and torque should be 14 ft-lb

Needing info on itake and exhaust studs.

With the angle of the head to intake the only way you could stud it would be after the intake is installed, meanwhile the RTV under the valley pan is setting up. You would need to remove the studs to remove the intake.

    LQQKn at 88 F250 ex cab 4x

Interesting, the turbo looks a lot like a Hypermax. The intake using the stock air cleaner is a dead ringer. I seem to remember another guy in Canada had a setup that looked the same. The intake hat is different from Hypermax. Is that a boost reference line coming off the intake hat? Where does...

    Project Big Red

Since you cut above the body line you don't have a reference point. Are your doors on? You could line up to the body line on the door with a straight edge. I don't remember if you have an extra bed, but the factory body line is on the bedside. You could cut a section out of a bed at a junkyard...
