So went to toss the meter on the truck tonight but my mag probe doesn't fit. Not even close. Ran a 5/16" bit through it no problem. Mine is a tach-n-time meter but seems nearly identical to the Kent more down to the model number.

I sandblasted the front cover to make sure it would be clean before I assembled it.

Suggestions?

Got the probe inserted. New problem. I don't know if it's not seeing the line clamp or what but I got -20 degrees. All rpm. Cylinder 1 and 4.

If I set the offset to 0 it goes to zero. I have to believe that means it's not picking up the clamp.

My lines are bare nickel plated. No paint oil or crud. I'm at a loss.

Is it possible for the engine to run at that timing? If it's correct that could explain your low power.

I read somewhere that the base timing at idle was something like -20. It was a post from Mel. I think he said if it didn't move the advance plunger was stuck. Man I hope that's not the case. I'd think it would fluctuate if it were reading it right. It's rock solid but I've never used one of these before so I don't know what normal behavior is.

And yes if it is correct I would think it would contribute to my power situation. Need to go find a video. I seem to remember Corey posting a vid using this meter right when I pulled the trigger on it.

@Dieselcrawler

Maybe??

Doh!! It's the mag probe. It's not close enough. I thought if it was reading rpm it was fine but now that I've read the manual more closely it makes sense. Reading is important I guess. Now I just have to open up the hole to get the stupid probe to go in all the way.

Yep. That sounded dirty.

Yeah,you just don't want it to rub because it will ware the end of the probe out.

The mag probe works best with an air gap of bout 3 business cards. I include a taped together 3 business cards with my meter rentals. Instructions are given to slide the cards under the timing tab and then slip the mag probe in till the end touches the cards. then remove the cards. If the mag probe rubs the damper it picks up dirt or paint rendering it useless.

OP did you ever figure this out.

It seems the magnetic probe that ships with this unit is slightly larger than the kent-moore unit. Its just slightly too big for the upper slot and too small for the lower.

I called DTI and they do not manufacture another magnetic probe. They suggested I could drill out the hole. They also sell a timing light for $80
