I owned a 69 F600 for a while with the intention of converting it to diesel, grafting a pickup bed on it and using it to tow my 5er around.
Here are the stumbling blocks I ran into;
The big one is gearing. Mine had a Rockwell F106 single speed rear end. This one probably has a rockwell or Eaton. The 2 speed gives you an even deeper set of gears to play with (under drive). Mine had 6.80:1 gears in it, meaning it was good for about 50mph with the motor running on the governer at 3800 rpm's. The highest gears I could find to swap into it were 5.83:1. With overdrive (non of em came with an over drive trans) and BIG tires this combo might work OK.
The best situation would be the addition of a Brownie.
BTW, the rear ends in these thing are HUGE. Fitting one into a pickup would be nearly impossible, and leave you with the same gearing problem as discussed above.
As far as engine tranny combos; that's the easy part. There's a whole bunch of room so a standard medium duty engine/trans would swap in easily.
There were about 5 different transmissions that these guys came with, from a NP435 (what mine had) to an Eaton or Clark 5 speed.
The vacuum assisted drum brakes actually stop the truck well if they're set up correctly, they just take a little getting used to; they have a bit of lag time like air brakes, but worse.
The wheel base can be altered pretty easily if you want to go that route.
As far as maneuverability, this truck would most likely have a tighter turning radius than a CCLB, because on bigger trucks, you can get the tires to turn way sharper.
So my thoughts on this deal? Buy it. Swap in a DT466, transmission of choice and a Brownie. These era of medium dutys are becoming more and more rare, because many of them are worth more in scrap than as a truck. The crew cab versions are EXTREMELY rare; I've never seen one in person. It would be the same project that I started, but never finished.
