Now I've stewed another minute or two, I've a question for the more seasoned members viewing this thread:
Is it possible the original poster has the timing gear off by a single tooth?
Would the engine fire with ether and continue to idle under such circumstances?
I'm just spit-balling and I...
Ok, now I think we may be getting somewhere. If indeed your pump is timed 180° out, it's not a problem intrinsic to the pump itself, you just need to reinstall it with the sprocket rotated 180° from its current position.
It's been quite a long while since I performed the job and so I shall...
If your pump were 180 out you'd notice a distinct lack of power, more smoke while running and a much louder "clack clack" engine sound. I'm baffled. You've got fuel delivery happening, as indicated by the white smoke while cranking, maybe the injectors aren't properly atomizing the fuel...
That's real weird. Hard to imagine a sizeable enough chunk of carbon to pinch between the piston crown and the head falling through the hole in the precup.
It's running well now?
There's a fuel cut off solenoid that is the kill switch for the engine. It requires 12 volts to hold it open allowing fuel to flow.
You'll notice, looking at your injection pump there are a couple electrical connections. The one closest to the firewall is the shutoff solenoid. The plastic...
I've got a tank with a broken fuel gauge and I've also noticed what feels like a short, intermittent power boost just before it goes completely empty. I figured same as you, air intrusion messing with the timing.
Is your starter getting tired? Needing 80° weather before it'll fire unassisted is uncharacteristic, in my experience.
Do you know what your compression numbers are? Pretty sure mine would fire down to 20° without any glow plug cycle. That's just a guess, it's been a while since I was running...
I won't even consider purchasing a truck on which the previous owner has been using ether. I know it can be used without necessarily damaging anything but, if a reasonable amount of compression is there, using ether is just avoiding addressing whatever issue or issues are actually causing the...
Is your timing 180 degrees out? It's easy to do and would cause the exact symptoms you're describing. You say it starts with ether? Is it running ******, with very low power?
Also, I see comments suggesting these engines won't fire without glow plugs. Nonsense.
A block heater and cranking the...
